Raoul Moat walks into a bar.

No idea what happened next, all the potential witnesses were found frantically clambering out the back window.

Sorry, I know that joke wasnt RaoulMoat'ly funny

I've made my position on this issue and my personal moral code crystal clear several times in this thread, but you keep harping at it so you can do like everyone else here and tell me what a bad person I am and/or how fucked up my morality is.

Because I believe that for an overwhelming majority of the time, the conscience of all human beings in existence are inclined towards the same abstract moral values. An overwhelming majority of our moral disagreements are disputes over how to implement or what the implications are of these abstract moral values. In my view, the way you regard the police as "the enemy of all things good" is unrealistic. It's the non-moral specifics of the situation that make it look like we're having a moral disagreement.

In your view, we all have consciences that point in different moral directions, giving us a different set of intuitive, abstract moral values and that therefore there is no room for normative ethical discussion. In your eyes such a discussion can only go as far as person A telling us what his moral opinions are and person B telling us what his moral opinions are. That's nihilistic, subjectivist, but most of all, totally unrealistic. Human beings have managed to debate meaningfully about moral issues for as long as recorded human history itself. If your view of morality was correct, none of this would have happened, or at least not so much of it.

The unlived life is not worth examining.

Yeah, and you think where I stand is that I do not value human life. I do not believe this is true, I just think that the state, as currently constituted, in every country in the world, to varying degrees, is an extremely oppressive and illegitimate institution, and my personal morality dictates that I will not assist the armed agents of such an institution apprehend its own citizens, be those citizens good or bad, unless I believe there are extraordinary circumstances that morally demand it.

Right, and this isn't one of them, I getcha.

    Quote
I do not believe those circumstances existed in this case. I understand that following such a moral code may entail negative consequences-- but I've always had a naturally more deontological ethical stance than a consequentialist one.

    Cool.

    Quote
But if given a choice between living free and living safe, yes, I will pick freedom every fucking time.

    That's also cool.

    Quote
If you think that means I have less value for human life than someone who would be more inclined to choose safety, maybe you're right, maybe you aren't, but either way I'm comfortable with my moral code and so are those who know me in the real world because they know I'll stand up for them even at my own peril.

I think you have less value for human life than most people actually.

    Quote
And to me that matters a hell of a lot more than abstract moral philosophizing online with people I've never met.

Yeah I get it. You care so little what we think that you have to keep constantly reminding us that you don't care what we think.

I guess the freedom of his victims (not just those who were in the police) are already forgotten then.

Thanks for returning the discussion to a more polite and respectful tone. I believe your characterization of my beliefs is incorrect, based on some faulty inferences combined with some admittedly mixed signals/inconsistencies from me. I actually do believe in objective ethics, and have argued for them elsewhere here on this forum

But I will not elaborate further at this time as I'm done with this topic. I know where I stand on this and debating it has led to nothing but acrimony and frustration. I'm done.

Yeah I get it. You care so little what we think that you have to keep constantly reminding us that you don't care what we think.

How about "the enemy of (almost) all things good"? Sounds more reasonable to me.

I've known police officers personally (as family friends) when I was younger, and know that whilst they don't always agree with the law they feel compelled to implement it; which is the primary reason I can't trust them and don't really respect them (at least in uniform). I've witnessed situations where the police have helped people, which generally could have been achieved by anyone who cared enough to help (giving directions or checking an old person who's stopped on the pavement is ok). The again, I've been in numerous situations where the police have come in mob-handed and created a situation that set me firmly against them (on demo's or nights out). Bottom line is that they represent state power and authority, why would I view them with any less suspicion or mistrust than that I have for the state itself?

    Agreed.

Being a fan of skinhead/streetpunk and being an anti-authoritarian leftist, I've always wanted to like the Oppressed and especially that song (didn't click play, but I assume it's A.C.A.B.)-- but, eh...not so much. Sadly the bands that lean right or are totally apolitical in that genre (The Business, Combat 84, Blitz, Cockney Rejects, etc.) made the best music.

Correct, ACAB seemed apt. Where I grew up it was quite ethnically diverse and we all rallied around danceable music, tbh.  cool2

It was rap where/when I grew up. Most of the white kids were into classic rock or metal. I was the lone punk rocker, but still really loved rap. Didn't get into classic rock or metal until I was older.

I think it's great I got a chance to grow up when commercial rap was still good, bein at the tail end of Gen X/beginning of Gen Y. Feel sorry for later Generation Y folks who grew up with post-Biggie and 2Pac crap.

Don't put words in my mouth by making leaps of logic, fucker.

I was just pointing out how (even by your logic) that murdering somebody is one of the worst crimes and this Raoul guy killed innocent people because his gf dumped him. But you are trying to say is some "hero" and "we shouldn't rat on him" all while he already killed  and wants to kill again. (because his gf dumped him)

Let's talk for 5 more pages about this...
