  • Where does faith end and ignorance start?
     OP - October 10, 2010, 05:59 PM

So, as some of you guys may know, i started my career to become a teacher this summer.

As it happens, theres a class about religion and culture... because it is important for a teacher to know how to deal with different religions and cultures. (duh?!)

Well, right now im working on an essay for this class about Evangelicals (fundamental christians) here in switzerland.
The funny part is, my partner for this essay happens to BE an evangelical women. (Oh the irony)

Well, the reasonable and patient mind that i am, i talked extensivly with her about her faith, but also about the ignorance of the church when it comes to science and such.

As you can imagine, she didnt want to hear any of it... i swear, she was so close to say that all science and evolution is the devils work.

Well, so, how can i react to something like that, if i have to be tolerant about any bullshit someone fundamental says? I want to talk to my teacher tomorrow and ask him the same question?

Where does faith end, and ignorance start? Because, i cant attack somones faith, but i can certainly lay the smackdown on someones ignorance.

Faith ends and ignorance starts when you believe your beliefs are the only correct one and you go out of your way to change everyone's views

    ^   +1

Faith is a belief that is not based on proof, so assuming faith to be something that conforms to reality as factual (and by extension expected to be accepted as factual by other) or rejecting/hiding from any (even potential) real truth as it may 'offend your faith', is ignorance.

What I hate about 'faith' is the bastardization religion has brought to the word.
It's gone from a heartily optimistic preference of something that might happen in life to a foolish acceptance of unsubstantiated mythical nonsense by blithering deluded idiots who wouldn't know 'critical analysis' if it hit them in the face at mach 3...

+1 ... when a mind (for whatever reason: stubbornness, fear, hatred, stupidity, etc) is unable to question and seek another point of view.

Faith and ignorance are partners. Faith requires you to believe in that which you are ignorant of.

All I say is this.  If god wanted us to believe in only 1 religion it would have made the choice objective, not subjective.  Subjective opinions tend to differ, and therefore not everyone would have the same opportunity to follow the "correct" religion.  Also, who needs humans to believe in stuff without proof?  A god for whom proof is easy, or conmen for whom proof is impossible?

I don't come here any more due to unfair moderation.
