"CONCLUSIONS: Harsh physical punishment in the absence of child maltreatment is associated with mood disorders, anxiety disorders, substance abuse/dependence, and personality disorders in a general population sample. These findings inform the ongoing debate around the use of physical punishment and provide evidence that harsh physical punishment independent of child maltreatment is related to mental disorders. "

I think it still depends on the "harshness" Spiritual Rose, a light slap (which some parents do use, exclusively) is very different from a boot to the ass or chappal to the face. That's not to say I think any parenting should require physical punishment (it's a loss of control), but there is a difference.

Me too. I was spanked as a child and there is nothing wrong with it. Some people consider spanking 'child abuse', which is crap.

Spanking is masturbation. It serves no purpose other than ritual stress relief or impulsive gratification for the parent.

Too fucking busy, and vice versa.

    Very interesting concept.

It really is just immediate gratification, and a selfish one at that.
