  • Things you like about certain countries/cities
     OP - August 13, 2011, 07:55 PM

You don't have to have been in the place - but it would be nice to read what people like about other places.

    ----

Salvador, Brazil: People love to party here. Biggest carnaval in the world is held.

Switzerland: Kids grow up with the opportunity to learn English, German, French and Italian.

Hamburg, Germany: Transport system. Punctual, cheap, graffiti-less, extra buses/trains during busy events like concerts, runs all night over weekends, even displays brief morning news on them.

City of London: Smart, sleek, clean buildings. Historic combined with contemporary in a way that fits.

Madrid, Spain: Normal security guards are allowed to carry guns, pepper spray and a German Shepherd. I've seen security man turn up within 30 seconds recently on the subway.

USA: The way failing is seen as a path to later success in business.

Astoria, Oregon, USA: Well ... just because you can feel like one of The Goonies around the town (the houses, beach, jail, all from the film)!

    San Sebastian,Spain: It's quite beautiful:

Northern England (e.g. Chester): It's cheaper, people say "love" as in "Hi love", "Bye love". And one doesn't have to spend more than 15 min commuting to work.

Bath, England; Zurich, Switzerland: Example of a well kept cities with minimal graffiti, pleasant architecture and scenic views.

Taiwan: apparently the people there are super friendly (as told by a completely random and unrepresented Hong Kong local once met at a restaurant!).

Only places I've actually been to:

Montreal/Quebec City: for an American, it's like a day trip to France. They speak a different language, women are hot, and plenty of places to party.

Just about anywhere in Mexico: Been to Mexico several times, different areas/cities. One of the few places you can go to a dance club and see an entire family from pre-teens to elderly grandparents.

Boston: It's okay if you're in a bad mood and feel like being a rude asshole, cause you'll fit right in.

New York: Just a cool-ass city. Not as cool as it once was, but still cool. Great subway system, and great place for night-owls like me. In the neighborhood I lived in there I had two 24 hour laundromats and four 24 hour delis within a short walk-- I wanna grab a sandwich, beer and cigarettes then do laundry at 2am, I'm all set.

Philadelphia: It's a major Northeastern US city and yet I can buy an AK-47 out of the trunk of a guy's car, pay in cash with no ID or background check and it's 100% legal here-- gotta love it. Can also smoke in a lot of the bars still, cops are nuts and corrupt to an almost comical degree, lots of cool and very cheap bars, and most importantly it's still a working-class town that hasn't been taken over by the yuppies, so it's still relatively cheap to live here. Lot of downsides to this place to, but that's not what this thread is about.

Chicago: Like a Junior NY but way cheaper

Slough: Just cause it looks like it sounds.

Swanton-Morley: Cool little English town. People are way fuckin friendly.

    fuck you

You just manage to come up with the most epic quotes ever.

    Little Fly, Thy summer's play

One thing I like about my country of birth, Kenya, is that the people have a sense of humour -- even in times of adversity.

Been to pakistan enough times and apart from the people, the heat, the flies, the rubbish and the dust it has it's moments. Been to stockhom in the early nineties (just saying cause it might have changed now) about three times and in comparison to London (was at university)it was a trillion times cleaner, which was shocking because there were no bins there either. not even fag ends on the streets! Thought what do smokers do?

They had square toilets rather than the ovalish ones in the UK, thought that's how all toilets should be shaped (remember this early 90's). Plus, listen to this, the city's underground/overground stations had escalators that only moved when someone stepped on them, thought London Underground wastes sooo much electricity.

I am my own worst enemy and best friend, itsa bit of a squeeze in a three-quarter bed, tho. Unhinged!? If I was a dog I would be having kittens, that is unhinged. Footloose n fancy free, forced to fit, fated to fly. One or 2 words, 3 and 3/thirds, looking comely but lonely, till I made them homely.D

Tunis (pre-Benali's ousting): So alive during summer nights. And everyone is very friendly (unless you tell them you're from Algeria Tongue). Other places outside of Tunis are stunning (especially the beaches).

Paris: walking along the Seine is as romantic as movies make it out to be. Also, Notre Dame de Paris is breathtaking. Other than that, horrible city.

    Finland
Espoo: Even though it's one of the most populous cities in the country, it seems rather sparsly inhabited. Greenery everywhere. And quiet.
Helsinki: Lots of nice parks, walk along the docks (especially in the summer), market place (especially right before christmas) and cathedrals (both Lutheran and Orthodox)
Vahto: really just a village, but they have awesome sand pits for swimming in summer.
Turku: Very old feel to the city, the castle is great to visit. The people aren't nice at all, though.
Hanko: Beautiful coastal town, great beaches and scenery.
