Hahaha, that’s brilliant.

I remember holidaying in France once. I saw men openly holding hands and kissing each other in public. No–one batted an eyelid. I thought that was wonderful.

Uhm, no. In many cities it's perfectly normal for same-sex couples to display affection. You get the occasional homophobic remark, but most people don't care.

in downtown DC the only people who give a fuck about that are the tourists.

I wish parents everywhere could remove their veil of religion and see their kids for whom they actually are.

I personally cringe at any public display of affection (well holding hands is OK, but that's about it) unless of course it's somewhere like on the beach or in a park...that's excusable, still there's a limit.
