I'll be honest and say my first experience made me feel naked, and I really wanted my scarf back. Then when I got used to the feeling of being without a scarf I had towear it again! And it made me feel like I was suffocating and trapped  Cry

I felt naked without it too...it sort of became a part of me, after all those years. So felt vunerable without it and exposed and very self concious for a while - didnt help when trying to concentrate on work etc.

Sometimes I feel jealous of the people who didn't have to go through all the issues of dealing with islam etc, just that carefree life, that freedom they've always had and just learnt how to handle gradually from a young age, from their parents/society etc and not having a sudden change, having to fight, having to build that confidence (because it wasnt supported) having to constantly be mindful of being 'caught out' etc etc just so.....  finmad

Having to change in my car to wear sexy clothes, shorts etc....so I don't bother with those clothes much because of that. It must be so liberating to have full control of such choices in life...so frustrating!!!

I was made to feel bad wearing 'pretty' clothes, and uncomfortable, and even around my dad and older brother, that's how mum would be like 'oh what you wearing, your dad and older brother would see' (something like that) and give a dirty look, and I felt so uncomfortbale to even wear a pair of jeans around the house because of that. I'm over it now.

I would get dirty looks from mum if I wore something I felt pretty in, fitting clothes. My school uniform jumper and polo shirt had to be baggy and long to just cover my 'bum'....sigh lol you can tell i felt very ugly Tongue

And since taking the scarf off (dunno about you guys) but that was the first time I learnt how to manage my hair, first time I went to the hairdressesr, experimenting with styles, (although mum started an argument with me about that and the dirty looks) bought straighteners soon after and a hairdryer, so there was a lot I was learning and being also distracted by Tongue All because I had more freedom going to university, even though I was still living at home (could say things like staying late at the library, or having to stay late at the lab etc).

    Aww dustie hugs

I had to go through a similar ordeal, wasn't allowed to wear western clothes, nor at home nor when going out. When i was allowed to buy jeans and tees they had to be 2 sizes bigger and then to wear a shawl on top (at the fucking age of 12)  015

I don't really know how or why i always was a rebel inside, so i always rebelled against my parents backward traditions.

No wonder you still couldnt embrace your hotness Tongue, because your folks made you not to feel that way. One of the disadvantages of living in the midst of muslims (particularly female) is the loss of self esteem.

    Just sharing an observation.

Argh. I really want to stop wearing the scarf. I guess I feel the same way as most of you, completely attached to it. Its a nice security blanket. But I have a feeling that if i stopped wearing it the unwanted suitors would disappear on their own.

I'm honestly not worried about dealing with my parents ( i live with them) but I'm worried about the muslim community and their backlash, specially since my uni is heavily muslim. BLEH.

I wish parents everywhere could remove their veil of religion and see their kids for whom they actually are.

and other than that, there are 3 muslim uni's in my area. 2 funded by saudi.

Really? You're in the US  Roll Eyes if anyone gives you shit, you can always sue =p for suppression of freedom of expression. Especially if the school does not have a uniform code. Who knows you might inspire other hijabis to not wear a scarf  Roll Eyes if they don't want to and start a whole movement  Afro. Remember in Egypt a few decades ago girls use to go to school without a hijab with no problem, the whole headscarf thing is a current phenomena.
