  • Research Study on Apostasy
     OP - May 12, 2010, 07:59 AM

I am currently planning a research study on the processes involved in apostatizing from Islam. The key aim of the study will be to offer a detailed qualitative account of what it is like and what it means for apostates to disaffiliate from Islam in the context of contemporary British society.
As part of the study, I would like to interview a small number of atheist/agnostic ex-Muslims living in the UK.
If you wish to be interviewed for this project, please contact me.
The identity of all interviewees will be protected.

    Dr Simon Cottee
    School of Social Sciences
    Bangor University
    UK.

    Hi Simon,

So long as I don't have to travel up to Bangor, then I'm happy to be interviewed - either face to face or over the phone or the Net.

I will PM you my details.

    Hassan.

OK, having just spoken to Simon on the phone I feel reassured that he is not coming from a perspective of any particular agenda and happy to take part in his research.

He was directed here by Maryam Namazie and would very much like to hear from other Ex-Muslims and hear about their experiences leaving Islam.

    Dear Hassan,

Apologies for not getting in touch sooner – I’ve been away travelling and have only just got back.
I’ve printed out your story and am now reading it. I’m on chapter 3. It’s extremely well-written. There’s a sparseness to your prose-style, which I like. It’s also fascinating and very funny in places.
    More later.
    Best,
    Simon

    Hi,

    Thanks for replying.
I would have got in touch earlier, but I've been away travelling.
Perhaps we can speak informally at some point over the summer. I can give you a ring and fill you in on the details of my project (which begins in September/October of this year).
    Best,
    Simon

He sent me a PM the other day asking for an interview. Is he still working on this?

    Just to clarify:

At the time at which I issued the invitation above (at the top of this thread), I was working on the grant proposal for this study. As part of my application for the grant, I needed to indicate to the grant body (the Economic and Social Research Council) that I had a viable sample of potential interviewees for the study – hence the above invitation.
I submitted the grant proposal last year. Earlier this year I received news that the proposal was successful. This means that from now on I’ll be spending the next 2 years working on this study – fulltime. At the end of this period a book will be published, along with some articles.
If anyone reading this would like to share their experiences or stories with me I would be extremely happy to hear from you.

I met Simon yesterday. He came up all the way from Wales to Scotland to interview me. I'd like to reassure everyone that he doesn't have a specific agenda. He just wanted to learn about my experience with Islam, the factors that lead to my apostasy, and how my life changed after that. The interview was informal and very laid back and it felt more like a chat than an interview. He was also polite and punctual.

I would like to encourage all of you to get in touch with him to participate in this this study. It's the first of its kind that's been done and hopefully it will give us more publicity.

The study is real and you can find information about it on Bangor university's website [ http://www.bangor.ac.uk/so/staff/cottee_research.php.en ].

I've met with Simon too, he was over yesterday. He's a very friendly person, we had a nice chat about my experiences and talked about my life story. He came all the way to Sheffield to talk.

I strongly encourage anyone else here who hasn't participated yet to do so. Would be great to have more women too as there seems to be a huge lack of us in his study!

Would have loved to participate but I'm not in England anymore :(

sounds really interesting, will you post up when the research is finished? Im interested in this type of thing although quantitative research is more interesting in my oppinion as it wuld be interesting to see how many muslims leave islam every year. I hear in saudi arabia islam is really weak and lots of people are viewing the western model with envy. id like to see some reports and research published on the issue, it wuld be a difficult research project to do though
