Actually, pop-evo-psych aside, some theorists say that it's cowardice that is much more our genetic heritage. You see, the macho warriors tended to die off early, while those who stepped away, gave in, compromised, negotiated etc. lived to procreate another day

OTOH, given the human proclivity for warfare, as thoroughly demonstrated by history, it has been argued that forcibly seizing resources is an excellent way of spreading your genes and will therefore be selected for.

As a group, sure yeah. But individually, warriors die earlier than negotiators/cooperators within those groups (at least theoretically).

Well, some warriors die earlier. As the saying goes, the point of war is not to die for your country. It's to make the other bastard die for his country.

In any case, dying earlier is not necessarily relevant in evolutionary terms, as long as you get some nookie first.

Problem is that the warriors of the more powerful group tend to kill off the negotiators of the less powerful group (along with everybody else who cannot be used as slave material) - at least that's what used to happen in the not so distant past.
