    DURATION: 1 HOUR
Documentary telling the shocking story of how a 23-year-old British girl was drugged and kidnapped by members of her family after refusing to go through with a marriage arranged by them, and secretly marrying someone else. With unique access to a specialist unit of Lancashire Police, cameras follow the investigation of a crime that split a family apart.

Good documentary on BBC yesterday if you're interested in this kind of stuff.  Much kudos to the police and prosecution service for their hard work; and of course the victim for her courage throughout the ordeal.
I'm sure some of us can relate to aspects of this story -- the anxiety, the sleeplessness, the emotional numbness, the fearlessness, stoicism, etc etc.

I thought it was abit boring to be honest. But very important program, basically here brother was being a cunt, I don't know why they dragged the father into this dude had nothing to do with it. Brother gave her Valium to 'drug' her. So, basically, the brother is such a coward man, how can you let your mom go to jail, why not just take all the blame on yourself and get your mother and sister out of the mess. He would have been out in 3/4 months anyway, even if they gave him 3 year sentence, what a coward, don't commit the crime if you can't do the time. disgraceful.

So, does anyone know what the actual sentences were, did they get custodial? and if yes how many real (hard) days in prison?

I was on a jury a while ago for a case of honour violence (severe beating) involving a Muslim girl and her parents. I have to give credit to the police and CPS because they clearly worked hard on the case and took it to court even though shortly before the trial she withdrew her original police statement and claimed in court that she'd made part of it up. Luckily there was other evidence and a change in the law for just this kind of domestic violence situation means you can take into account original police statements even though the alleged victim later retracts it in court. Something that is common in these sorts of situations due to family pressure etc.

    Hey Billy,

There was a BBC3 documentary not long ago on forced marriages, and it focused on two young women (both muslims) who ran away from their arranged and forces marriages to get their freedom, and it shows their struggles and what they had to go through. And it offers hope - for one of the women, at least. I found it relatable on many levels because there was a similar instance in my own family a long time ago. I highly recommend it, it's an awesome watch and has its sad moments. It's called "My Forced Unwanted Wedding" and you can watch it here: http://www.1channel.ch/watch-2727775-BBC-My-Forced-Unwanted-Wedding

Ateapotist, thank you for sharing. I'm prying my eyelids open with matchsticks right now and I'll be sure to watch the doc tomorrow. I really like watching docs like these. Thanks again.

I took a peek at an Islamic forum (not too fundie) to read their opinions on this documentary.

Most of the responses were sensible but facepalm @ this.

What if it was your sister who ran of and married a random? Well, in that case any real man/father/brother would not take this lying down, thinking let them do whatever they want. It's just a natural feeling one gets. And RassolAllah said something negative about those who do not have this feeling in them. And that's the very least, you'll have the feeling of reservation in your heart and perhaps eminity towards the male for some period of time. The most is people take it into the physical realm.

Also, he argues that this kidnapping and drugging was wrong because being too nationality and tribe specific about the marriage of your sister/daughter is wrong in Islam. That's all. Roll Eyes

It was a worthwhile watch, but shocking to see the lengths people will go to still gain control over their own family. It's tragic to find that forced marriages still happen in some communities in the UK.  If only 1st gen parents could drop the backwardness of their own culture that they percieve to be normal and honourable, and just realise that family honour shouldn't even have to equate towards anything when it comes to making your own children happy. For the women out there suffering in silence, I just... I wish you guys can find a way to build up the determination to be free and happy one day. Help is out there and people WILL listen. Cry
