  • Islam is going to take over the world at its rapid growth!
     OP - March 20, 2013, 05:12 AM

No just kidding it seems to have a ways to go.

    See image here ---> https://nationalpostnews.files.wordpress.com/2013/01/fo0324_religion1200.jpg

I love how Secular/Irreligious people according to this statistic is the same size as Islam.... and that's just people who don't believe in God period. and that number is probably higher than any census can ever accurately account for.

I also love how, the most religious areas (at the bottom) are the most shit places in the world to live (all in Africa, and some areas in the Middle East). Referring to poverty, lack of education, and poor human rights.

I also love how Judaism is so fucking tiny, but has the entire Islamic world on edge as the people who are plotting to take over the world.

    Any comments on this graph?

Yes. Why is there no data for Oman Tongue It is all Ebaady Islam, weird how this map didn't know that. I don't think some shades are too accurate. Or at least, the map may be referring to government? Dunno but Iran should be as dark a shade as Saudi. Shia extremism is no better than Sunni extremism. Iran also has religious police.
Russia, least religious? Okay then <_<'

^ Gallup polls ask people if religion is an important aspect of their lives or something similar and determine how religious a country is based on how many people respond "Yes".  It's a measure of the religiosity of the average people rather than how much influence/power religion has politically. Your average Russian is usually less religious than your average American but there are certain powerful factions in Russia that are affiliated with the church there hence the shitty neo-theocracy they've got going, whereas the US has a constitutional separation of church and state, despite the comparatively high levels of religiosity.

    @thread
It's interesting that the godless outnumber Muslims. I didn't know that.

In order for Islam to take over the world, it'd have to at least not be wrong. Or it'd have to halt scientific progress and enlightenment values that are steadily eroding its central truth claims.

It'd also have to stop being a dysfunctional and volatile melting pot of differing beliefs and interpretations, and somehow deal with the internal conflict tearing it apart from the inside. And as a unified ideological movement, it'd have to consist of people with some kind of authenticity and integrity to their belief, not comprised of numbers bolstered by poor nodding muppets who got accosted on the street and manipulated into parroting the shahada in a cringeworthy 3 minute conversion. "Congratulations! You're now a Muslim. Here's a leaflet explaining your new worldview."

Too fucking busy, and vice versa.

I always look at these kinds of statistics with a grain of salt because, because there is no way to get an accurate count when people are forced to be a certain religion in some countries. Like Malaysia where everyone born there is automatically Muslim... forever. Atheism and even Christianity has be kept secret by many in hostile countries.

ALSO some people claim to be a certain religion but don't practice, and are just a certain religion by name, which is true for all religions.
I don't know if someone can pretend to be atheist/secular and secretly really believe in a God. Maybe I'm being biased, but people who are secular seem more honest in their beliefs/ non-beliefs and practice it. Versus people who claim to be Muslim, Christian etc. but don't actually follow all or sometimes any of the rules.

I think this is going to hurt Islam in the long-run. Going for Quantity over quality. I find it fascinating reading about new converts, that try to bring in certain viewpoints from their previous culture/religion and inject it into Islam to truly turn it into the 'peaceful, champion of women's rights' religion they were told about in the dawah.

Well y'know, it's always the small ones.

Never really understood why Judaism is one of the biggest religions since it's so small, I mean Lamaism is bigger than that and I've never heard of it.

    Wait, Africa is a religion?

What does secular mean? Many Christians and some Muslims believe that the government and religion should be separate.

I assume Secular means people who did not want to be put in any religious category, but not call themselves atheists.

I think Judaism is considered 'big' not by size but simply because global society keeps talking about them making them sound like this large religion, when it's not even close. It's always either about the Holocaust, or they are taking over the world, Israel or something.
I'm sure if people stop putting Jews in the spotlight, then they would be insignificant.

Judaism is a major religion because it is one of the three big Abrahamic religions that have come to dominate religion in the Western World.

For most of Christian Civilization, only two religions were allowed: Christianity and Judaism. And for most of Islamic civilization, only three religions were allowed: Islam, Christianity, and Judaism. So for historical reasons they are considered the "big three".

Judaism was the original Abrahamic faith, Christianity and Islam are both simply adaptions of it. So in a sense Judaism could be seen as more influential than Christianity and Islam, since Judaism influenced the beliefs of the other two a lot, but there is very little influence of Islam or Christianity on what Jews believe.

Nowadays, Judaism is not as influential or powerful as it was in ancient times in terms of the number of adherents. Yet it is still pretty influential in that Jewish groups are often wealthy and can influence politics a lot.

I don't think so. I mean, I barely hear anything about Israel in Aussie media apart from when they kill a few hundred Palestinians/Lebs/etc in response to a rocket, but recently, there was "Prisoner X" (the Aussie that died in an Israeli prison - wanted to leak documents, kinda like Bradley Manning), and the media dug into that story.

I think Israel evidently puts itself in the spotlight, especially since it wants to be seen a up there with the US.

Oh yeah and in my boring little ghost town, there is a Jewish community with a school and all that. They were never in any "spotlight" until they decided to invite Daniel Pipes to speak in their community. I specifically remember the hate being directed at when he tried to politicise the bush fires that happened here and claim they were done by Muslim terrorists. Of course, the memory of the bush fires still hurt, so there was some backlash.
And it was a damn shame for us because their school and my Islamic school used to meet up every term for student tea mornings, and our community was like  "Huh? but it was going so well?" That would be like our community inviting a man whose job was to give speeches about how evil Jews are. It just wouldn't stand would it?

^ I'm surprised Pipes is that nutty. That sorta thing is something I'd expect from Debbie Schlussel or Pamela Geller or something. And talk about a stab in the back.

Daniel Pipes? You mean the guy who founded CampusWatch at the height of the Neocon era because the broad field of Middle East Studies in American universities was apparently a haven for the anti-American, anti-Christian and anti-Semitic?

    Well, colour me unsurprised.

Regardless of Israel, Jews have a profile because of history and their contribution to western societies in terms of their position in it and reaction to it - and their intellectual, philosophical, artistic contributions.

Dunno but Iran should be as dark a shade as Saudi.

Have you ever been there ?
Let me give an example. I heard my first MetallicA song in a taxi in Tehran. With a girl. At night. How likely is that to happen in Saudi Arabia whistling2?
Seriously, Iran is definitely less religious than Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Irak, …
