Well, sex itself is not considered unclean. In fact, at least according to the hanbali school, even sexual fluids are not considered unclean. They say that perhaps the reason a full bath is required after sexual contact is because of the excursion itself (juhd).

There are several narrations in which Muhammad encouraged taking pleasure with one’s spouse, even during the menstrual cycle.

There are varieties of opinions and views on sex. It all depends on what texts you chose to focus on, and how you chose to interpret the more general ideas about modesty and "honour" that Muslim must uphold. It just shows how much individual views and culture impact the scholars' "Islamic" verdicts

I've never heard of "procreation not recreation" being touted by Muslims. Never. That's more an old Christian thing. What I know about Islamic sexual ethics are pretty much in line with what HM is saying. Seeking sexual pleasure is encouraged within marriage -- so long as you avoid the naughty place and genital contact during menses. Also, while ultra-Orthodox Jews take "be fruitful and multiply" very seriously, no Jews have sex through a hole in the sheet; that's a really old myth:

Sex without love For some, having sex without liking/loving the person would be considered "bad". In Islam this is perfectly normal, because it is your obligation to have sex with your spouse even if it is the first time meeting him. But consenting sex between two people who love each other is frowned upon if they are not married, or happen to be of the same sex. What can I say ....
