I neither admire them nor pity them for belief alone. I'm indifferent to it. If it brings meaning and purpose good for them. If it brings hardship and misery, all we can do is hope they see the light, so to speak.

This a Hundred times. The best form of morality, is one that is progressive, the best societies are progressive, the scientific method upholds progress and not certainty. Certainty results in stagnation in science and technology, and leads to outdated moral values.

I wonder how many of these people genuinely believe what they say, I get the feeling some of them are just carrying on for the sake of appearances.

I wonder that all the time! I've been there, so I know how easy it is to get stuck in that situation where you have to force yourself to believe the silly words you're saying.

I don't believe in god/designer but whenever I argue with people like that I go:

"Ok for the sake of argument, there is a god. Prove to me that it's the islamic/abrahamic god."
I just skip debating existence of god and just start with fine details of islamic law/sharia and go from there.
I don't argue as much anymore, unless someone pisses me off.
