How many of you guys speak languages other than your mother tongue?
Feel free to share your experience here.

Define mother tongue well I'm fluent to various degrees in three languages, and have rudimentary understanding and some conversational skills in two more. I'm aiming at learning at least one more, and refining my skills in in the two previously mentioned. But I'm already 27, it just gets harder and harder....

What I really meant was your native language, I know that there is a subtle difference between native & mother but for the purpose of this thread I'm using a loose definition.

I'm fluent in 3, have some conversational skills in 1 more. I'm currently working on Portuguese and I hope to start Turkish soon although I may change that to Arabic.

I've been working with New Kingdom hieroglyphs, 10th-8th century Hebrew and High Greek loanwords. I ended up refuting the whole Quran King vs Pharaoh claim by mistake. It had a "click" moment, I laughed and moved on.

Its complicated but I covered a lot of the ground word in one of my first posts on the forums here. Simply put the word for ruler of Egypt could never apply to a foreign land or foreign ruler. The words were context specific. A ruler of another place has completely different words and root symbols. The titles and symbols in Egypt for a ruler of the land itself are divine so bare no relationship with ruler ship of a foreign place. So since the Quran uses the word King it is in fact wrong as this word can apply to any king. It is not context specific. So the miracle claim is in fact a method of transliteration which is used by everyone translating languages. It also shows in fact the Quran made an error as it is not context specific but uses a general word. The Hebrew word Muslims claim is wrong is itself a loan word which acts as a transliteration itself as many loan words do this in foreign languages. It wasn't until I read the hieroglyphs that I figured this out. So the source itself, the titles in Egyptian not Hebrew or Arabic. There is also large amount of words tied to the Egptian titles like "Son of the King" (Transliteration), "Viceroy of the King" (Transliteration). Hebrew and Greek use the word in a context specific manner as does French, Old English and Modern English. So in fact the Quran's verse is the least specific and least accurate. It is the sloppiest translation in my opinion.

It would take a full course to explain how to read Egyptian. I am not sure how to approach the topic with those that do not and probably will never understand Egyptian. It is a dead language which is only used in academia.
