    Very sad situation. Romeo and Juliet.

    A young couple have attempted to commit suicide in the grounds of the Taj Mahal, India's famed monument to love.

    Police say the pair - a Hindu and a Muslim - slit their own throats after their parents had refused to let them marry because of different religions.

    They were found in a pool of blood, and are now said to be in a stable condition.

    Marriage outside religion or caste still attracts censure, and even honour killings, in parts of India.

    "The girl cut her throat first followed by the boy," said deputy superintendent Aseem Chaudhary, the AFP news agency reports.




    The Times of India quoted the young man as saying that the couple had tried to convince their parents to change their minds, but that "the boundaries of religion remained the biggest hurdle".

    "We did this after failing at all possible ways to be together," he said.

    The Taj Mahal was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as a tomb for his wife Mumtaz Mahal in the 17th Century.

    It is the top tourist attraction in India.

    Cry too sad for words. while religion is claiming to be bout loving the people around you.... But love isnt allowed! (well, loving people from other backgrounds isnt)

    Sad, but also strange...

    Religion as a force, and human responses to such a force. Thankfully it didn't end in death, but I wonder what the different parties learned?

     This emotional black mail of grown up young men and women by  their  parents (NOT all but many) of south Asia terrifies me... Couple that too forces/comments from other relatives of the life simply becomes unbearable so the tragedies ,

    Lilyesque  ...... this Romeo and Juliet sill stories are good for dramas or for  south Asian zillion movies.,   NOT FOR REAL LIFE   times were different now times are different..  ]young men and women must draw boundaries to every one including their parents     ., If they were financially independent instead of knifing themselves..   they should have said to their parents  "SCREW YOU GUYS"  ..come to us when you become sane people  

    So  those who are in similar situation  [ stand up and fight.. Simple golden rule should guide you guys.. ...

    Why couldn't they get married? Do the laws of india forbid for people to get married without their parents' consent?

    isn't shah rukh khan married to a hindu tho? Yet he's the most popular guy in india, or so i've heard

    Shah Rukh Khan doesn't matter, written laws don't matter. When one is dependent on parents totally, as most people from that culture are, some things are much stronger than law or celebrity.

    I think they learned that nothing, including love, is worth the price of life. A lesson well learned, and now for them to continue to toil into death as do us all.

    Law is on their side, society and social protection are not. Many families are still dependant on each other for financial security and shelter. As society doesn't like mixing, there is no security.

    What a bummer. I'd imagine that it would be a heck of a story to tell their grandkids if their stuck together. But i'm glad they're ok tho
