  • Denmark. Arson attack on Islamic Society
     OP - August 16, 2015, 09:41 PM

So we had an arson attack on the premises of the Danish Islamic Society today:

    Quote
Suspect held after arson attack on Islamic centre

A man in his 30s was arrested on Sunday for allegedly attempting to set fire to a building used by the Islamic Society in Denmark.

Danish police said Sunday they had arrested a man on suspicion of torching an Islamic centre in Copenhagen's Nordvest district earlier in the day.

"At 11.31am, the police were informed that a man had started a fire by throwing a flammable liquid ... at the Muslim centre," a police statement said.

The fire, which caused only superficial damage to the outside of the building, was quickly contained, police said. Some 40 people were inside the building at the time.

The suspect, who was born in 1980, will appear in court on Monday. Police said that the suspect has been previously convicted on charges that include vandalism.

The building complex belongs to the Islamic Society in Denmark (Det Islamiske Trossamfund), whose members also worship at an adjoining mosque. The group denounced the fire as "an act of terrorism" on its website.

This act "was likely the result of political and religious motives... As tragic at it is, it unfortunately does not surprise us," the centre said.

Since February, when Omar El-Hussein, a young Dane of Palestinian origin, shot dead a filmmaker and an unarmed Jewish security guard outside a synagogue, Denmark's Muslim community has feared being viewed with suspicion.

Those concerns were amplified after more than 50 graves were destroyed at the Muslim cemetery in the Copenhagen suburb of Brøndby in June.

Out of Denmark's population of 5.7 million, nine percent are foreign-born, of whom some 296,000 originate from "non-Western" countries, official statistics show.

And there were people inside. Fuck man.

`But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad.  You're mad.'
`How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice.
`You must be,' said the Cat, `or you wouldn't have come here.'

Two months ago the Muslim cemetery in Copenhagen was vandalised:

Calls for unity in wake of Muslim cemetery attack

Politicians and community leaders have reacted to the desecration of a Muslim cemetery by urging unity and self-control.

The Danish Islamic Burial Fund, which operates the Muslim cemetery in the Copenhagen suburb of Brøndby that was desecrated over the weekend, has called for restraint in the wake of the destruction.

“We encourage cooler heads to prevail and hope this incident will not be used by politicians and others to increase tensions,” Ahmet Deniz, head of the organization, told DR.

Some 50 graves were destroyed, with tombstones broken and strewn over the burial grounds. According to police, graves were also urinated on.

Among those buried at the Brøndby cemetery is Omar El-Hussein, the 22-year-old behind two fatal February shootings in Copenhagen. Deniz told Jyllands-Posten in the days after those shootings that the group considered denying El-Hussein's family's request to have him buried there.

"My concern is over extremist attitudes and actions on both sides. Both from his friends and from young Danish people who perhaps could also riot later," Deniz said.

Police initially said that they viewed the weekend action as a likely "prank", but were quick to reclassify the incident as “political-religious vandalism” following a storm of outrage on social media.
“A policeman talked about this as 'a prank'. I am very angry about the use of that word,” Social Liberal (Radikale) MP Zenia Stampe wrote as a comment to her Facebook post about the attack, which has already received over 40,000 likes since Saturday.

In the wake of the desecration, several politicians have called for a united front against extremists.

“Unfortunately there is a growing animosity between certain communities. I want to emphasize that regardless of whether it is a Jew, Muslim, Christians or atheist being antagonized for their views, it is vital that we condemn such actions,” Socialist People’s Party MP Özlem Cekic told Jyllands Posten.

The sentiment was shared by Red-Green Alliance (Enhedslisten) MP Johanne Schmidt-Nielsen, who released a statement saying “We cannot allow [extremists and religious fanatics] to set the agenda. We must insist on living peacefully together in diversity.”

Friends and family of those buried at the cemetery began work to restore order over the weekend, and a memorial attended by 300-400 people was held at the site on Sunday.

“The ones who did this are not pranksters, but psychopaths – it’s them who ought to be thrown out of the country”, memorial attendee Nicki Madsen told Ekstra Bladet.

Over the weekend, Hans Christian Andersen’s grave was desecrated with graffiti saying “Fuck Denmark”, and a church in the Copenhagen suburb of Ishøj was also vandalized. Police have not found any evidence to connect the Ishøj church vandalism to the Brøndby incident and have concluded that the Andersen tombstone was defaced as early as Wednesday.

In the wake of the above vandalism I saw a lot of responses by Danish Muslims who were touched by the support they got from fellow Danes.

The arson attack is still pretty new but the comments I have seen calling for more of the same and then some being circulated all over Facebook are truly worrying and create a lot of anxiety among many here who might only be remotely "Muslim".

And there were people inside. Fuck man.

So it says. But I have not heard about if it was 5 or 50 meters from where people were present so I'm not aware of the imminent danger.

Obviously still a horrible thing to do.

It was a neighbour who alerted the authorities and not people on the premises itself.

Yes. And if you have a "Muslim" name the authorities are pretty quick to call you in to a "talk" but those guys roam freely all over 'net and never get any attention and it seems to get worse (well except that of course quite a lot of Danish left-wing activists constantly expose them but then they go viral and then they aren't isolated to the context but are ALL over the place which increases the "awareness" but also the exposure of such sentiments - and the Police and left-wing activists don't mix. Because the Danish police is professional and neutral like that).

But yeah, Søren Pind, we have a problem. Plx fix.

I think extremist comments by right-wingers calling for further action is just going to further radicalize young people who are already on the verge of becoming bonafide Jihadis. Even if they don't see these screenshots, just the line of reasoning can be enough for some as the hypocrisy is quite blatant by now.

Synagogue is attacked -----> It is immediately condemned and of course it is assumed a priori a Muslim did it.
Mosque is attacked ------> Yes, but Muslims did it/how do we know it's arson/is there any evidence etc.

Just the fact that the people have to make equivocations is a sad sign of the times.

So yesterday - Saturday - about 1400 people showed up at the place and formed a "peace ring" as also happened after the attack on the synagogue which killed Dan Utzan back in February to show their condemnation of such attacks and the many, many hateful comments online that followed:

Chairman of the Danish Jewish Society Dan Rosenberg Asmussen:

Spokesman Imran Shah of Danish Islamic Society:

Primary organiser was Danish-Afghan refugee Rona Naghizadeh (who, by the way, just had to her citizenship postponed together with more than 3000 others who had already been approved because we changed our Social Democrat-led government to a "Liberal"-led government who is totally at the mercy of Danish People's Party. Now she doesn't know when she eventually finally will become "Danish" Undecided )
