Hi,

I'm planning on doing a personal Quran study after the exams, because I'm tired of having to admit I haven't read the Quran when arguing.
After seeing Hassan's video on the editing of tafsir (concerning the verses about Maria the Coptic slave girl, 66:1-5), I want to make sure I get my hands on a reliable one.

I found a tafsir by Maududi on http://www.quranenglish.com/tafheem/
for each chapter. I searched for the story about Maria and it's there, but he goes on to say that the story about the honey is more reliable as it was also narrated by Aisha, and the story of Maria is unreliable. Furthermore, the story of Maria is described only briefly and regarding the sex part it only says Maria and Muhammad were "in seclusion" and after Hafsa found them he promised he won't be in a "conjugal relation" with her in the future..which sounds a bit like a euphemism.

Any better Tafsir you can point me to with less biased translations?

Also, any verses that come in mind I should pay attention to?

I would like to point out that I have read the Quran in both Arabic and English(native tongue). And people you argue with will still say you haven't read it properly and all that shit.

So only spend time on this Quran thing if you really thing it will help you. Finding a teacher to teach you tafsir would be more to your advantage...especially if hes well known.

I wish parents everywhere could remove their veil of religion and see their kids for whom they actually are.

Well, I don't care about that actually, as long as I can build up a logical conclusion.
For example, concerning Sura 66: 1-5 they say it's about the honey, but Hassan makes a good point in his video by saying was threatening his wives, with the angels and god on his side...all of this for the honey story? That doesn't make sense. It makes more sense that he was referring to his encounter with Maria that was being spread.

I've searched a bit online, but the one I linked in the original post is by far the best.
Searching for Tabari or ibn Kathir just leads me to websites with a transcription of the tafsir...but Maria is not even mentioned there at all :/
fucking corrupt business is what it is. Yet they keep saying the holy book is unchanged. Way to go muslims.

I assume you aren't arab...?

Arabic can be loosely translated because well its how they designed the language. One sentence can mean many things.

So muslims pick and choose the better meanings for their agenda. I saw one quran translated where they had translated People of the Book as Jews and Christians but later editions removed the Jews and Christians and kept it as People of the Book.

I wish parents everywhere could remove their veil of religion and see their kids for whom they actually are.

Thanks!

Maududi was a 'modern' scholar from Pakistan, he isn't widely known. Its best to read the most famous tafsir, Ibn Kathirs:

"People of the book" refers to Jews and Christians as they received 'revelation' before, although some also class Sabians as "people of the book" (I fink not sure) so it doesn't matter if its changed or not.

Well the thing is, I looked at the link you provided and went straight to 66:1-5, but again, only the story about the honey. Nothing about Maria the slave...
Just like Hassan said in his video. The online versions of the tafsir have that part cut out (and maybe other controversial parts as well). So far, only the maududi tafsir contained BOTH stories..

Actually, he is quite widely known, and believed to be a zindeeq or heretic among some circles of the Deobandi. Nevertheless, many support him, and his ideas have influence, particularly with Revivalist/HT types.

But if you want a tafsir that mentions the Maria story, you should check out altafsir dot com. It includes Tafsir al-Jalalayn, among others, and they mention the story.

Dont Muslims claim everybody received the revelation before - Thats why 124,000 prophets were sent isnt it? So why this prejudice against the other believers when Mo also claimed the Christians & Jews changed their books?
