Pakistani rape victim Mukhtar Mai, who rose to international prominence after she fought for the imprisonment of her rapists, has just become the second wife of the cop designated to protect her. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090318/ap_on_re_as/as_pakistan_rape_victim_marries_2

I dunno whether to be pleased or angry, on one hand she sets a good precedent(again!) by remarrying in a country & region where rape carries huge stigma & her new husband is obviously head over heels in love with her & will probably take good care of her, yet I somehow feel sorry for his first wife, she might be very unhappy & insecure now that she has a co wife, a difficult issue for any wife to deal with, & such a famous co wife whom her husband so adores that he threatened to kill himself when Mukhtar repulsed his proposals. In any marriage, three's a crowd.

Maybe Mukhtar should have taken her feelings into consideration & not consented to the wedding.

I'm quite appalled. His first wife must feel like shit! If my partner threatened to commit suicide over another women and I'm not good enough for him I'd be bloody heartbroken! Congrats to Mai for her courage but that guy is an ass!

I just read that. What is so f'd up about it is that she initially rejected him because he had a second wife. He responded by threatening to divorce the first wife. The family's of the first wife and his family found out (they are connected by numerous marriages) and then his other in-laws threatened to divorce each other in retaliation for his divorce. So if she said "no" then 3 marriages would have ended up in divorce. He also threatened to commit suicide.

She admits to accepting the marriage because she felt she was being a humanitarian.

Looks like a pretty dis-functional setup to me.

Maybe her standards have dropped lately.

Anyone who doesn't gang-rape her is a fuckin Prince Charming.

I consider myself a liberal, & I support gay marriage so I don't think polygamy should be banned provided its between consenting adults, but for gender equality, polyandry should be legal too.

All's fair in love and war.

Sure she may hold a grudge that her new husband blackmailed her, and maybe his first wife will resent that he threatened to divorce her to get a new wife and the spouses of his in-laws may be upset that they were threatened with divorce in retalitation for the first threatened divorce.
