  • Help needed: I am making a video on Zakir Naik (please read)
     OP - January 28, 2014, 06:55 PM

So, the gist of it is, a good deal of people (specifically, a good number that I know) almost take this mans word as urr, gospel.

I would like to try and open their eyes/minds to the joys of thinking for oneself, or at least a level of skepticism that will allow them to enquire further into things without hitting them immediately with ISLAM IS FALSE ...because they will mentally shell up.

I've decided the best way to do this will be to create a video of Dear Zakir to point out all of the lies, twisting and manipulation of words and flat out BS that he spouts during his seminars

In order to get them to engage with the content of the video - I will not (at first) be editing in any content that 'proves Islam wrong', not directly anyway, as the video will immediately be thought of as blasphemous and that will be the end of that.

So what I'm asking from you is any (well, some of the many) incidents you know of (and if possible provide links, or page numbers from his book) where Naik is telling a black & white lie - not one that is open to interpretation (i.e. hitting women)

The point of this is to try to get people to question a lot of the ideas that they already have (from him) and hopefully lead them to the question why would he lie?

    So far I have

    1. Zakir Naik speaking at Oxford University USA - he is asked by a student that Since Zakir himself commends the Uni on being a 'bastion of free speech', why is it that Islamic countries do not tolerate the proliferation of other faiths, while western countries allow Muslims to practice & preach their faith and build mosques etc - Naik replies by saying that not every country is run exactly as it should be via the Qur'an, and in these cases it is up to the individual to ask the relevant government why they are not allowed to preach

^ this is juxtaposed with a video of him giving a talk in India, speaking in Urdu (many of you may have seen this), where he is asked the same question and essentially answers 'if you know 2+2 is 4, you cannot allow someone to teach 2+2=6, we as muslims KNOW we are right, so cannot allow someone to teach something wrong'  hilarious stuff.

    2. The next clip is of him giving a speech straight out of his Scientific Miracles book, where he states that the Qu'ran revealed the moon had reflected and borrowed light, long before this was known by anybody else.

I then point out, with the use of Quran.com, and the 5 common English translations of the Quran (Pickthall, Yusuf, Ghali, Khan, Shakir) that in the relevant verse, the moon is not described as having reflected or borrowed light, but as giving light. I then show the other cases of the words noor/nooru muneer/muneera being used elsewhere in the Quran, again meaning anything but reflected or borrowed light.

    3. Zakir's '25 mistakes in 5 minutes' video about evolution - I may save this till the end though, as many people hear evolution and think 'athiest' and immediately switch off

    4. Zakirs lies about the water cycle - a video in which he says the Qur'an talks about the evaporation & the water cycle in great detail, and lists off maybe 20 or so Surahs without giving the exact quotes - none of these mention anything about evaporation (the most key element of the water cycle from a 'couldn't have known it back then' perspective)

    5. Zakirs lies about Noahs ark being a regional / local flood - video of him comparing the biblical and quranic stories of the flood, he himself says the Biblical version makes no sense as all the animals couldn't fit in the boat, there were no whole civilisations wiped out etc etc, and stresses it was just about Noah and his people - I then present the relevent surahs that say exactly the opposite (plus some videos of other much smaller floods that wiped out a shitload of people) - this one is particularly good as Naik kind of debunks himself here

    6. Zakir's 'men can have more than one wife because there are more women than men in the world' - juxtaposed with the relevant statistics that say completely the opposite

    7. Zakir Naik claiming the book of John speaks about Muhammad - again, biblical scripture proving that this passage clearly refers to 'the holy ghost', not Muhammad

Sorry I know that's a bit of a long read but are there any other instances you believe I could include

All the references for the Quran will be explicitly laid and and backed up with all 5 translations aswell

No I'm not, but I married into a Pakistani family

I'm using the first and second videos Afro though for the sake of not getting peoples defences up I won't be using the third I don't think

Interestingly he does his evolution schtick pretty often...he's a more recent video, I think I will use both to highlight the fact these weren't mistakes

Rationalizer has a vid or two exposing him.

`But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad.  You're mad.'
`How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice.
`You must be,' said the Cat, `or you wouldn't have come here.'

Further proof of 2. being false by ignorance or lies, take your pick.

"Anaxagoras brought philosophy and the spirit of scientific inquiry from Ionia to Athens. His observations of the celestial bodies and the fall of meteorites led him to form new theories of the universal order. He attempted to give a scientific account of eclipses, meteors, rainbows, and the sun, which he described as a mass of blazing metal, larger than the Peloponnese. He was the first to explain that the moon shines due to reflected light from the sun. He also said that the moon had mountains and believed that it was inhabited. The heavenly bodies, he asserted, were masses of stone torn from the earth and ignited by rapid rotation. He explained that, though both sun and the stars were fiery stones, we do not feel the heat of the stars because of their enormous distance from earth. He thought that the earth is flat and floats supported by 'strong' air under it and disturbances in this air sometimes causes earthquakes." Burnet J. (1892) Early Greek Philosophy A. & C. Black, London

"In about 450 BC Anaxagoras was imprisoned for claiming that the Sun was not a god and that the Moon reflected the Sun's light. This seems to have been instigated by opponents of Pericles" B Russell, History of Western Philosophy (London, 1961), 79-81.

"The sun is a mass of fiery metal, and the moon is an earthy lump (with no light of its own)." http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/anaxagoras/#SciAnaCos

"The earth [according to Anaxagoras] is flat in shape. It stays up because of its size, because there is no void, and because the air, which is very resistant, supports the earth, which rests on it. Now we turn to the liquids on the earth: The sea existed all along, but the water in it became the way it is because it suffered evaporation, and it is also added to from the rivers which flow into it. Rivers originate from rains and also from subterranean water; for the earth is hollow and has water in its hollows. The Nile rises in the summer because water is carried down into it from the snow in the north. The sun, the moon, and all the heavenly bodies are red-hot stones which have been snatched up by the rotation of the aether. Below the heavenly bodies there exist certain bodies which revolve along with the sun and the moon and are invisible….The moon is below the sun, closer to us. The sun is larger than the Peloponnesus. The moon does not shine with its own light, but receives its light from the sun…. Eclipses of the moon occur when the earth cuts off the light, and sometimes when the bodies below the moon cut off the light. Eclipses of the sun take place at new moon, when the moon cuts off the light…. Anaxagoras was the first to describe the circumstances under which eclipses occur and the way light is reflected by the moon. He said that the moon is made of earth and has plains and gullies on it. The Milky Way is the light of those stars which are not lit up by the sun." A Refutation of All Heresies, 1, epitome, 3.

Granted he said a lot of things were wrong. However this does not prove his idea that moon light is reflected light wrong. However he wasn't the only one.

Yeah, I'm a long-time follower of him, I did think of whole-say adding one of his videos about Naik (water evaporation) though I think I've decided against it for the purposes of visual continuity

    *with his permission of course

    cheers @bogart

I did toy with the idea though it's always very difficult to show Muslims a source from outside Islam (i.e. science/history) as it's almost always categorically rejected

But I'll add it in as it's another hammer blow to his bullshit

First draft nearly done. Will post tonight in a new thread and I'd appreciate some feed-back. I'm not THE best video maker out there but I hope it gets the point across..
