how severe can the beating's be in islam?

i have heard from some muslims that when a man beats his wife he can not leave a mark on her skin and that includes bruising but marks(bruising) shows up much easier on lighter skinned people, does that that mean you can beat a black wife harder than a white wife? common sense i think shows, when mohammed said no marks he meant no scarring.

I don't think Muhammad said no marks. At least it doesn't say that in the Koran. It just says to beat them but it does not elaborate on how hard, based on the Koran it seems to be totally at the discretion of the husband.

Unless there is a Hadith where Muhammad said no marks, but I am not aware of any....

now that you mention it, i have not seen a hadith where he says no marks, i have seen Hadith where he says the beatings shouldn't be too hard but never seen "marks"

Abu Dawud, Book 11, Number 2137:
    Narrated Mu'awiyah al-Qushayri:
Mu'awiyah asked: Apostle of Allah, what is the right of the wife of one of us over him? He replied: That you should give her food when you eat, clothe her when you clothe yourself, do not strike her on the face

Abu Dawud, Book 1, Number 0142:
    Narrated Laqit ibn Sabirah:
I (the narrator Laqit) then said: Messenger of Allah, I have a wife who has something (wrong) in her tongue, i.e. she is insolent. He said: Then divorce her. I said: Messenger of Allah, she had company with me and I have children from her. He said: Then ask her (to obey you). If there is something good in her, she will do so (obey); and do not beat your wife as you beat your slave-girl

it is not mentioned that "how hard" you can beat her....there are several conditions as from hadiths and commentary

    1) don't strike on face
    2) don't break her bones..

these are the conditions i know of

Disbelief doesn't justify getting tortured in eternal hell
