This just makes me angry. Why are people in such an advanced supposedly-tolerant country still so prejudiced against gay people? it really is baffling to me.
http://uk.movies.yahoo.com/blog/article/15352/why-doesnt-hollywood-love-phillip-morris.htmlJim Carrey and Ewan McGregor's gay comedy 'I Love You Phillip Morris' has been delayed indefinitely in the US.
The offbeat film, which has already been released in the UK to generally positive reviews, was supposed to be released on 26 March in the US, but was put back until 30 April.
However, a spokesperson for the movie has told The LA Times that the film has been delayed once again and there is no release date scheduled for the time being.
Based on real life events chronicled in the book 'I Love You Phillip Morris: A True Story of Life, Love, and Prison Breaks,' Jim Carrey plays a con artist who falls in love with his titular cell mate (McGregor).
Carrey, who has been praised for his performance, recently revealed that he was bracing himself for controversy over the film.
He said, "I don't really care about the reaction, if there's a negative reaction. I care about doing a story about amazing, fascinating people. It's a true story about love, and someone's relentlessness to find it and keep it."
There has not been an official reason given for the postponement of the film, and while it may not be Carrey’s most mainstream film, it’s still something of a shock to see a movie with two big leads struggling to find a release date.
So, why the delay?
The subject matter has been mooted as a potential problem. While films like 'Brokeback Mountain' and 'Milk' turned into Oscar-winning triumphs, they were packaged as serious dramas. But this is a quirky, surreal film, starring a lead actor normally seen in family comedies.
The other aspect concerns the worrying state of independent movies. 'I Love You Phillip Morris' struggled to find a buyer at the Sundance festival in 2009, until Consolidated Pictures Group eventually picked it up. However, marketing and releasing the film could be a costly venture without the backing of a major studio.
