Muslims who call converts "reverts".

Does anyone else find this infuriating? In addition to being spectacularly arrogant, it's also confusing - before I knew of this silly convention amongst Muslims, I always thought the term “revert” in this context referred to someone who left and then returned to Islam. If Islam really is innate in all of humanity, why is it that we’ve never seen the religion being established independently outside the Arab world? Shouldn't there have been tribes in places like Africa or North America who discovered Islam before it was spread across the world? No, because it’s absolute bullshit. What a stupid fucking practice.

Because Christianity and Judaism (and perhaps Zoroastrianism) according to Muslims are all corrupted versions of the same faith called: ISLAM!

Converts can be just as guilty of propogating the term. I used to like because it made me feel less of an outsider within the Muslim community. Firstly, it's reassuring to ones self (as Godot mentioned) that you are simply coming back to something innate and universal which is natural. Secondly, it made made me feel more of an authentic Muslim within a community largely born and bred into Islam. Identifying myself as something other than a convert into a community (some Muslims get their cultures heavily mixed up with their religion) it signified we had a bond of belief which transcended their (or my) culture, which allowed me to retain my own (or be encouraged to Islamicise it). ie. It helped me maintain or adapt my identity as I liked, as reverts are usually seen as 'clean slates'.

Each of us a failed state in stark relief against the backdrop of the perfect worlds we seek.

I actually never heard that term before joining this forum. And it pisses me off to no end.

Its one of those things in which everything has to be oriented around Islam, because of the self-generated delusion that Islam is the centre of gravity of all humanity and creation. It speaks of the insecurities of Muslims, and an inability to accept the world as it is - profoundly, and complexy, and wonderfully, beautifully non Islamic and cosmpolitan.

Well it speaks to the arrogance that every one is really a Muslim and they somehow fucked themselves over by you know being born into another religion which is equally as implausible as Islam. It gives an easy "out" to Muslims about people who actually look at the religion and decide that it is rubbish. You know they are secretly Muslim, but are willfully rebelling.

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

Never liked the term 'revert' and the few times I ended up using it, usually in mosque study circles full of other white converts it made me want to cringe. I have always been proud of my heritage and those Muslims who tried to make me feel ashamed of it didn't do a very good job.

It's quite a clever mental trick really. It's a way of saying "This was always within you, you've just stopped denying it now, you have accepted your reality and identified your true self"

It is also a way of saying that Islam was the first ever religion, even before Mo made it up. So when people like me say "When Muhammad made up Islam" people can say "Islam is the world's oldest religion".

It's simply a way of making it appear to always be right, and that others came along afterwards and got it wrong.

What I find funny is when Muslims talk about the Tanakh being corrupted and yet they can never point out, word for word, where it has been corrupted. It is almost as though Islam gives its followers an open invitation to cast aspersions on other religions without any evidence to back it up: "oh, your religion has been corrupted" - based on what evidence? the circular logic found in the Qur'an? The book is the word of God because the book says so?

Stones in glass houses. Bible has been changed but the hadiths ( the ones that are accepted as true) remain perfect in spite of being written 300 years after the prophet? I mean they point out the multiplicity of translations, versions, books ect in the bible but ingore that scholars had to throw out hundreds of obviously false hadiths.

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

Yep - I hate that revert crap - it's an arrogant way of imposing their perspective on everyone.

What I find funny is the whole "there are many bible's" which is clearly a load of crap.

There is only one tanakh, sure, there are different translations with different exegetical work but that is no different to the Muslim world - with one difference, you very rarely get people who claim you must know ancient hebrew or otherwise you're not 'reading the real Tanakh'.

As for multiple versions of the Christian bible; there are only three if you're going to get anal; there is the Protestant, Catholic and Orthodox with the separation based on order in which the new testaments part appear and debate over whether a particular part of the old testament is included. In other words, it isn't even close to the clusterfuck that some Muslims make it out to be. Compare that to the 6 hadith collections of dubious reliability, a Qur'an of different exegetical explanations and God help you if you try to find an 'authentic' biography of Muhammad!

It's pure propaganda. I always thought it was immensely arrogant and twisted.

I'll be damned if my innate disposition is to kiss the ass of a narcissistic tyrant. That seems like the exact opposite of what I'd hope the instrinsic nature of man to be.

It's bit like that verse in the Qur'an where Allah supposedly holds every person on his hand and asks if he's 'their lord' and they all reply 'indeed!' like abject little slaves.

You'd think you'd remember something like that...
