As per end of the article, if neanderthals were a distinct species to modern humans, then why were they able to mate?

I read a similar article in the New Scientist, they excavated some site in Spain and found shells painted and pierced as if they were used as pendants, and little pots with the remnants of red dye in them.  All carbon dated to before homo sapiens arrived in the region.

Although its the general rule that different species cannot mate and produce fertile offspring, the distinction between intra-species variation and sub-species can become blurred in some cases.  I would imagine thats the case with Neanderthals and homo sapiens.

The offspring of closely related species are often fertile or just one sex is fertile.  Google ligers and tigons and see what you get.
It often happens between duck species and fertile mallard/wigeon crosses can occur. Happens between snake spp too and probably lots of other closely related spp.

We are being, continually, through evolution. Look at the so-called 'diseases' caused by environmental incompatibilities, like lactose intolerance and gluten intolerance, caused by major changes in human diet at some time in the past: although the population as a whole benefits, there are those who do not and whose breeding success is compromised (breeding success, here, being the survival of young to maturity). That leaves those who thrive on that diet at an advantage over those who do not.

The differences between the 2 spp were obviously not enough to prevent the production of fertile, successfully reproducing young.

Don't worry, you probably wouldn't notice any major differences for a few hundred thousand or even a few million years.

There's no name for them - I'm gonna coin it first - neandertoid or humanderthal?

I guess it would be both, as per the Liger/Tigon, depending on who was behind/in front during mating  dance

Well, they became extinct on May 14. 2010 when NBC (God) announced that selective pressures like the high cost of production and diminishing viewing figures had pushed them over the brink.  They  failed to mutate into anything viable.

I believe there are different ways of defining a species and only one of them involves the ability to reproduce (bacteria can be different species yet horizontally transfer genes.)  Besides, they were identified as a separate species long before we realised they had mated with homo sapiens.

I don't come here any more due to unfair moderation.
