My parents made a big deal about choosing a "Muslim name" for my baby brother after he was born, too.

We had to pick out the name from a book of "Muslim names".

Just give them hippy names in any language.  That way they can say my name is Arabic or Urdu for grace, or love, or hope instead of saying my name is a Muslim name.

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

^ Did you hit them up with my timeless wisdom?

Yep, I told my dad that exact same thing.

But he's a stubborn Paki blockhead.

^ Not sure his clan is any more infected with the contagion than most others.

This thing about his dad having a dream and "message from Allah" seems like 'bidah'/innovation to me.  Plus, his dad is trying to appease God who he believes gave his son pancreatic problems and has the power to cure it.  (You used to be a Salafi;  you should know about bid'ah. Tongue)

See the emboldened parts below from Bobonaut's original post to see what I mean:

SO... right out of the blue my parent's want to change my youngest brother's name. He is against it and so am I and my other brother. Basically my Dad has been having these dreams and my Mom and Dad think they are a "message from Allah."

Let me give you some quick background:

Before my youngest brother was born my dad wanted to name him X, but my mother wanted to name him Y. So eventually my Mom convinced my Dad to name him Y. While this was going on my Mom says my Dad was having dreams about naming him X. Unfortunately my youngest brother's pancreas became non-functioning somehow and that made my Dad blame my mom saying, "It's all your fault, you had to name him Y! It's because of that!"

To sum it up (Read this if too lazy to read above text):

    • My Dad got a "divine" dream from Allah, forget what it's called in Arabic...
    • They want to change my youngest brother's name
    • He is against it
    • My parents want us to convince him to change his name
    • What do I do? How do I oppose them?!

^  True, but how do you know what dream is divine from 'Allah' and what isn't.

I would still bet that Bobonaut's parents are more superstitious than normal Muslims.  What you tend to find is that the Muslims who get these 'divine messages' from Allah tend to be looking for a quick solution to some problem, and they brood through their memory looking for a time when they may have displeased Allah and they try to fix that.  Maybe in this case it is not exactly bid'ah but it is certainly heading that way.  Some go further and go to mullahs/peers/faithhealers to fix problems like this.

i don't get it, you're parent named your brother X and now they want him to be called Y
that will be confusing for him in the wider world, he'll think everyone's asking him a question when they say his name.

If you ask me to define anything i will slap you with my pimp hand and make you cry like a biatch.

My parents believe in witchcraft and magic.... does that say anything??

It's surprising how many Muslims believe in witchcraft and magic. I knew one very devout Salafi who refused to participate in potluck-type events, because the food could have been "cursed" or something wacko

I'm sorry Bobo for the bullshit superstition. Your parents should instead be comforting your brother. They are distressed and are trying to help their son any way they can but they should realize that this is bullshit. This is what happens when religion and superstition takes over. It makes us act even more irrational in distressing times.

It's amusing that they think God is this petty. He lets an 11 year old suffer for the decision his parents made 11-12 years ago. As if God the Creator of the Cosmos would be displeased by the formation of letters and sounds. "They're not in the order I want them to be!!!! HE MUST SUFFER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Incredible more, that an atheist has a more noble view of their God. The answer for this is simple, we worship the God of our heart.

So why Mom and Dad is changing the name of 11 year old brother Bobonaut?  Doesn't he already have a Muslim name??

Well ., if your brother didn't had an Islamic name have fun with him by saying "Islamic name will give a chance of having four wives in near future in Britain." MULTAN: A 23-year-old Pakistani man plans to marry two women in 24 hours, gaining national attention for his novel solution to a dilemma over wedding the woman he loves or going ahead with the marriage his family arranged.

Pakistani law allows polygamy based on the concept that Islam, the main religion in the country, allows up to four wives. But men who take multiple wives usually do so years apart and must get approval from their first wife prior to a second marriage.

Azhar Haidri initially refused to marry 28-year-old Humaira Qasim – the woman to whom he has been engaged since childhood – because he wanted to marry the woman with whom he had fallen in love, 21-year-old Rumana Aslam.

But the decision threatened to split his family apart since arranged marriages are often customary in Pakistan.

”I gave this offer that I will marry both of them,” Haidri told The Associated Press ahead of his first marriage to Qasim on Sunday in the central Pakistani city of Multan. ”Both the girls agreed.”

He is scheduled to marry Aslam on Monday.

     that is a good fun.,

You could say that Allah has done enough already by providing them with the means to allow your brother to take shots for something that he otherwise would've died from, and that they are being somewhat arrogant instead of being grateful to Allah.
Also, as Luthiel said, you could argue that as long as the name isn't blasphemous, Allah wouldn't care what it was, and that he would be more concerned with the good deeds your brother does rather than what he is called.

He could, but that would be a lie. Insulin treatment was pioneered by a doctor who was a fervent Christian, antisemit and anti...islam?

It doesn't say so in the article, but he was. If his book on the bible the talmud and the coran was published today he would be in jail in the west or hunted by islamists or both.
But the good that he did in the world is here to stay.
OP, i'm sorry for your brother and I wish him all the best. Your mother shouldn't be blamed for that nonsense. It's a terrible illness to have so young but with help he could have a good life. I mean real medical help.

Well my Mom should take some blame because she is the one pushing the name change against my brother. My Dad asked once and when my brother said no he's like ok...
