I guess it's only up to us to calculate it out. Of course manual transport will get us nowhere. Trying to get to the "edge" of the universe with space rockets is like getting an amoeba to circle the earth before the sun dies. It's just not going to happen. However, I do think with advancing technologies we can create shortcuts through space and time like wormholes. There is still much more to learn about light and the dimension it lives in. But when we're even anywhere close, I don't think it will be possible to send humans or even machines out there, because the universe expands beyond even the realm of protons and neutrons. It will be up to light, heat, time and dark energy/dark matter to tell us what it looks like out there.
Perhaps one day we will advance in time to exist out of protons and neutrons. But we will be completely different beings with a totally different concept of a consciousness where emotions, thoughts, intelligence, and mortality are considered as brain-dead characteristics as rocks. Just imagine the possibilities we will have if we reach to that new form. We might even see the universe and dimensions through a whole other kind of perception that would be impossible for the human mind to comprehend. By then, we will become gods. And I hope I can find a way to live to see that day.

I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star
In somebody else's sky, but why, why, why
Can't it be, can't it be mine
