  • Hadiths by surah + verse
     OP - June 18, 2011, 10:18 PM

Is there a way I can see which hadiths are related to a surah+verse?  e.g. if I select chapter X verse Y I would like to be able to quickly check if there are any "and so this verse was revealed" or "Mo said that this means ABC".

Does anyone know of a website or document?

    Thanks!

I don't come here any more due to unfair moderation.

I'm not sure there is such a website.  The closest I can think of is http://www.tafsir.com/ which gives the interpretation of the Quran (which usually involves producing Hadiths which give those verses context (which is what you want)).

where you can select different school of thoughts for a given verse,,

and this is from my man  Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi

    http://www.englishtafsir.com/

And this http://www.englishtafsir.com/Quran/66/index.html  put me off ., and i realized everything in quran is bull shit..

There is indeed! You're talking about the Asbab al-Nuzul (contexts/occasions of revelation) for the verses. The latest translated tafsir to be added to www.altafsir.com is the Asbab al-Nuzul of al-Wahidi. It's purely dedicated to giving the context that each verse was revealed (where there is any), rather than commentary on what it means.

Here's what the site says about it:
    About the work

'Alī ibn Ahmad al-Wahidi, Asbab al-Nuzul 'Alī ibn Ahmad al-Wāhidī (d. 468/1075), the earliest scholar of the branch of the Qur'anic sciences known as Asbāb al-Nuzūl (i.e. the contexts and occasions of the Revelation of the Qur'an). Al-Wāhidī and subsequent scholars aimed to collect and systemize information concerning all the known reasons and contexts for the Revelation of particular Qur'anic verses. This translation by Mokrane Guezzou represents the first accurate and reliable English translation of this seminal work.

Since it only covers 83 suras and only a minority of verses have a context given, it's best to use this page http://www.altafsir.com/AsbabAlnuzol.asp?SoraName=1&Ayah=0&search=yes&img=A so you can see all the verses that have a context together for a selected sura.

I am aware of these tafsir sites.  Let me give you an example.  18:90 apparently has 2 hadiths associated with it

I heard al-Hasan when asked about: "We had not appointed any veil to shade them from it," he said: "Their land can not sustain a building, so when the sun rises they dive into the water and when the sun sets they come out and graze like animals."

Qatadah said: "It is mentioned to us that their land sprout nothing. When the sun rises they enter the caves and when the sun sets they go about their daily living."

1: I cannot find these hadiths on a credible website.
2: It would be nice if I could find them listed as being relevant to 18:90

An answer to either of these 2 items would be appreciated Smiley

Those 2 examples are both in ibn Kathir's tafsir in Arabic for 18:90, though only the 2nd one (Qatada's) is in the English translation on http://www.tafsir.com/default.asp?sid=18&tid=30801

"Qatadah said, "It was mentioned to us that they were in a land where nothing grew, so when the sun rose they would go into tunnels until it had passed its zenith, then they would come out to go about their daily lives and earn themselves a living.''"

I can't think of anything else to help with the more general process of finding hadith though

The answer you seek is the Asbāb al-nuzūl  (circumstances of revelation), which is similar to a Tafsir but focuses on the context of the Qur'an, providing Hadiths to explain when and why verses were revealed.

Can anyone give me a credible (read "Islamic") URL for the following hadith?

I heard al-Hasan when asked about: "We had not appointed any veil to shade them from it," he said: "Their land cannot sustain a building, so when the sun rises they dive into the water and when the sun sets they come out and graze like animals."

This is a post from Hassan since he couldn't post here.

"That hadith is quoted by Ibn Katheer in his tafseer. I note it is not quoted in the English version online, but is certainly there in my own Arabic original"
    This is the Hadith in Arabic: سَمِعْت الْحَسَن وَسُئِلَ عَنْ قَوْل اللَّه تَعَالَى " لَمْ نَجْعَل لَهُمْ مِنْ دُونهَا سِتْرًا " قَالَ إِنَّ أَرْضهمْ لَا تَحْمِل الْبِنَاء فَإِذَا طَلَعَتْ الشَّمْس تَغَوَّرُوا فِي الْمِيَاه فَإِذَا غَرَبَتْ خَرَجُوا يَتÙ
and this is a link to online Arabic version of the page in Ibn Katheer: http://quran.al-islam.com/Page.aspx?pageid=221&BookID=11&Page=1

    Bazinga!

The closest I can get is this:
    http://tinyurl.com/ArabicIbnKathir-18-90

The actual page would be good though because then people can auto-translate the text.
