Question do women always pray behind men?

don't ask me about the painted feet in the picture of the person taking the photo I dunno.

So in my comic I drew a Muslim couple praying together next to each other. But I'm wondering if it's going to cause a dilemma because apparently Muslim women are suppose to pray behind their husbands or put their mats slightly behind them.

1. Is this another subtle form of women being second class in Islam?
2. Is it like a rule women have to pray behind their husbands or can they pray next to them as equals?

3. Is this even an issue with women in regards to equality in Islam, or just a subtle cultural thing no one bothers to question?

The Islamic response to why women pray behind men is because it's more "appropriate" and it "makes more sense" since the men do the prayers out loud - of course, women can't since their voice can be considered sounding attractive/sexy.

"It will benefit everyone" if women pray behind men so that the women supposedly don't feel uncomfortable with men looking at their butts, and men won't have to be tempted or distracted by staring at women's butts.

Again, it's all about being sex-focused and obsessed. I'm sure some Muslim scholars and apologists out there will give you other justifications for it, because it's not just this one reason revolving around what's appropriate and men/women segregation, but... don't buy it. This reason, the supposed distraction women would give, is at the heart of why women can't pray in front of men. It's what makes the most 'sense' to Muslims - in their logic, culture, and religion.

Rather be forgotten than remembered for giving in.

Well the whole butt things make kinda 'sense' lol since Islamic prayer postures are kinda... questionable and awkward.... to me(growing up Christian just simply closing your eyes during prayer, makes more sense to concentrate and tune out everything). but whatever. I'm talking more like a married couple, just praying next to each other in their own home. Not necessary at a congregation. Does that rule even matter to them.

I can 'semi-understand' the segregation thing so one can concentrate on prayers, but why do women always get stuck segregated in the most uncomfortable place, like behind where they can't see or hear :/

the person with painted toes, taking the pic.. would have been smacked across those feet , ... we never point our feet towards people who are praying or sleep with our feet towards mecca... everyone knows that!!

Same here Maybe she/he(?) did it just as a show of defiance?

But yeah, women have to be in the back so men don't get hard ons looking at them all hunched over doggy style for Allah. Also, so that men can fart on the women, literally and metaphorically. (Ok that last part is conjecture but could be valid given how Islam treats women in general).

My favourite is when Muslim women defend this as though they are being soooooo valued by being put behind the men, mostly cramped in closets and basements while men get to enjoy the main, larger facilities in mosques.

Incidentally, there is actually a verse in the Quran that Muhammad made up *cough* I mean, that Allah revealed about this problem of men checking out the women during prayer. (Side note: Studying the so called reasons for revelation was a major blow to my faith. So many verses that otherwise seemed noble or eloquent turn out to have been made up, *ehemmm* revealed for some of the stupidest reasons ever.)

The verse, “And indeed, We (Allah) know those among you who are foremost and we know those among you who stay behind.”

Tirmidhi narrates that this verse was revealed because some of Muhammad’s companions would stay behind in the back of the mosque to watch the women as they prostrated on the floor, especially the hot ones. I quoted the Arabic below in case anyone doesn't believe it lol

الآية الثانية قوله تعالى : { ولقد علمنا المستقدمين منكم ولقد علمنا المستأخرين } .

فيها خمس مسائل :

المسألة الأولى : في سبب نزولها : روى الترمذي وغيره عن ابن عباس أنه قال : { كانت امرأة تصلي خلف رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال ابن عباس : لا والله ما رأيت قط مثلها . قال : فكان بعض المسلمين إذا صلوا تقدموا ، وبعضهم يستأخر ، فإذا سجدوا نظروا إليها من تحت أيديهم ، فأنزل الله الآية } .

Logical though. Some men would have stayed behind to watch the hot women prostate, hoping to catch a wiggle. A query, this bring up the notion that islam whilst (I am supposing) had at this time the rules of non free-mixing, the veiling, the non-mahram and the one place that they could intermingle would be the mosque!! Don't make sense.

But yes the underlying reason being sex-based. happymurtad you may know if it is tru that the reason for not eating a pig is more to do with it being a randy bugger/unclean as well as instead of diseased/eat it's filth/unclean. Other words does the unclean refer to health and hygiene or it sexual habits or both?

I am my own worst enemy and best friend, itsa bit of a squeeze in a three-quarter bed, tho. Unhinged!? If I was a dog I would be having kittens, that is unhinged. Footloose n fancy free, forced to fit, fated to fly. One or 2 words, 3 and 3/thirds, looking comely but lonely, till I made them homely.D

Who knows! Maybe this was before Muhammad made up the verses about women having to wear hijab—that came relatively later on in mo’s life. Incidentally, there is a lot of evidence that women were not as segregated back in uncle mo’s time as they are today. Muhammad only made up the verses about his own wives having to stay in the house after some lingering house guests tried chatting them up once he got older. That’s when Allah also decided that after Mo died, no one else could ever marry his wives, not even the teenage ones, for as long as they may live. That’s if we accept the traditional narrative of Allah just “revealing” verses as situations in Muhammad’s life dictated.

Myself and the missus used to pray(the odd time) side by side, more or less, back in the day. Did we do wrong? Come to think of it she may have been slightly further back but only slightly.

Of course the special rules for Muhammed. No one could look at his women or perhaps none of his women could have him cuckolded. He didn't trust his companions. . Convenient 'revelations' when he had the horn.

Where Mo and his companions from the upper-classes for their time and place?

Mo was a nasty, jealous old geyser hence all the BS "special" rules (read: restrictions) that his wives were subjected to. According to the Quran Mo belonged to "the best tribe of the best people (paraphrasing) and I've read his tribe was a big deal; it's a running theme in the Hadith/Quran that he's protected by the fact that he's a member of this powerful sub-clan or somesuch.

LOL, Yeah, guilty as charged. Unfortunately I spent many moons listening to bearded old Bedouins explaining shit like this.
