Of course, there's a technological arms race going on between some countries (notably Iran and China) and Tor. A Tor-over-VPN/SSH tunnel setup would be a trivial way of making it more difficult to track down Tor traffic.

Wouldn't using Tor + VPN also make you look more suspicious, like you're trying too hard to hide your traffic, and must be doing something wrong?

And are you saying VPN encrypted traffic can be broken down by ISPs or governments?

In all seriousness, there's a whole industry out there that caters to governments who want to snoop on their people. Google ZTE Corporation, VASTech SA, Amesys or Narus - you can safely bet that they want to break VPN security where possible.

comon the paki government doesn't track their citizens THAT closely.

They only interfere and ban "controversial/haram" stuff only when it gets viral or sumthin. Plus with all the unusual porn ppl watch in pakistan a random forum will be the least of their concerns.

I hope it stays that way, you never know though if pml n takes over next year during elections. Last time they took over they fucked up all the course books in schools, inserting religion in science and social studies, and even making arabic a compulsory subject. Thankfully their gov only lasted an year.

out of curiosity in Pakistan do they teach like evolution and omit lots of facts and just downplay it's importance in biology? Especially human evolution.

I didn't study biology, but from what I've heard, they downplay it and don't mention human evolution, only plant evolution (and may be some animal), and they give some verses from the quran talking about 'things changing' at the start of the chapter about evolution

I'm in the second category. I'm not sure if the router logs internet history or not but my dad is very tech savvy so I can't take the risk.

1) How do I delete files from the router? I access most of my controversial material from mobile devices on incognito/private mode. I know about deleting history, but what are temp files and do I need to worry about deleting these from mobile devices, too?

2) Will using an SSL proxy from now on prevent further history being logged by our home router? I am thinking more in advance, as I am planning to 'run away' in two years' time, and it would be pretty shit to be traced just by my father taking a quick look at internet history via the router...

I live in England btw. Help/advice re: these questions would be really appreciated. Thanks so much for taking the time to share your knowledge and help others

Xainab, the safest option would be to use mobile data (3G/4G) and turn off WiFi on your phone. If you're not connected to your home (or any other) WiFi router, it can't track you at all. Depending on how much data you have, limit the time you do this. Or even change your mobile contract/tariff so you have enough data for your controversial browsing.

Thanks jrg. Problem is that pretty much everything I look at on the internet would be something my dad has a problem with, so I will have to seriously scale down all my internet use at home. Do you know if viewing things through mobile apps (eg a Youtube app, rather than in the browser) would also get logged on a home router history?

I've just been reading through your posts to get a feel for (a) how controlling your parents (particularly your father) are and (b) just how tech savvy your dad is. Having read that he's a software developer with 30 years' experience, I strongly suggest you stop using the home Internet connection for this type of browsing. I feel certain that he isn't monitoring your activity now, because you'd have heard about it. But, it sounds to me like more of a control thing, and fear of losing who they want you to be, rarher than genuine religious fear for your soul. If something triggers his suspicions, I'm sure he has the knowledge, and likely has the motivation, to start monitoring what you do online without even needing to look at your computer or phone or tablet.

As a follow up to this, don't stop using private browsing just because you're not using the home WiFi. I haven't read much of this thread so I apologise if I'm repeating things.

Private browsing will cover your tracks on the device you're using, be it a phone, tablet, PC etc. However, it has no way to delete tracks from the modem/router used to access those sites. In a home environment, think of the router as not only the doorway out of the house to the Internet, but also as door security that has the potential to record everywhere you go until you return home (and perhaps even email that log to an administrator, aka your dad).

In a mobile Internet scinario, the modem is built into the device, so the metaphorical door security is in your hand/pocket/bag all the time. Therefore, provided you use private browsing on your mobile device, whilst connected to your operator's data network (3/4G, not WiFi) your tracks will be covered from your dad's eyes.

Thanks a lot for your help and advice! It could really save my skin down the line. It means a lot! I will bear in mind everything you said. (Writing to you from the university computer right now.)

I'm laying low for now, but I think the main reason for my dad to start monitoring router history would be after I run away, which will be in about two years' time. He will probably want clues to find out where I've gone. Are the things I've accessed via home wifi likely to still come up on router history in two years' time?

It's unlikely anything is being recorded at the moment. Usually, this is something that would have to be consciously activated by someone who could log in to your router. But nothing is impossible. Once logs are enabled, and particularly if they are periodically automatically emailed, then the potential is there for indefinite tracking. But as I said this is highly unlikely in a regular home environment. You should be safe, just keep the above in mind

1). when I was trying to reply to posts in a folder I used to see the posts of others from the folder under that "post/preview " reply box... Now in the new format I don't see any posts..

that is a useful feature to have and it helps reading and quoting others when we are replying to them..
