This is the first time someone has explained to me the roots of the Islamist movement and where it came from.

Ahh, Maajid Nawaz. I'm actually quite interested in him, I find him a very intelligent and very interesting man

Far as I'm aware the taliban and al-qaeda were trained and mobilized by the US in the cold war to fight against the Russians. Some people say it was the US that developed the idea that drives terrorism today but I've never looked into it so can't say if it's true or not.

I wouldn't put anything past the Yanks and their war by proxies but don't forget the house of Saud.

They provided the ideological stamp of approval.

    Or so I think.

They also used those terrorist groups for guerrilla warfare in South America.

The Saudis do everything tey can to fund and push these batshit crazy extremist Islamic teachings and ideology. I truly hope I live to see the day their oil runs out. Unless they get smart and invest into other business like Qatar. Stay dumb Saudi, stay dumb.

I do find the guy interesting, as has already been said. However, Islamism is not the only problem with Islam and os not responsible for Muslim or Islamic, what we would call it, extremism and fundamentalism. Like any other religion, Islam contains texts and passages that are problematic and contradictory to our modern society built upon equality, freedom and democracy. Only by reforming Islam, like Christianity, and by introducing true secularism into Muslim societies, can the litteralists and fundamentalist Islam be marginalized. Today, child brides, cliterectomy, opression of women among other things are all practiced and supported by Muslim interpretations and texts. That is a big problem.

Who do you think funded and armed the Al Saud? It was us, the Americans. Without rifles exchanged for their land rights, could the Al Saud have run around Arabistan killing off the non-Wahhabis? I think not.

Oh, you are right. It was not the Americans. It was the British.

    http://www.kanaanonline.org/articles/00361.pdf

"Known in the West as “Ibn Saud”, the Wahhabi Imam Abdulaziz was well loved by his British masters. Many British officials and emissaries in the Arab Gulf area frequently met or interacted with him, and generously supported him with money, weapons, and advisors. Sir Percy Cox, Captain Prideaux, Captain Shakespeare, Gertrude Bell, and Harry Saint John Philby (the so-called “Abdullah”) were among the many British officials
and advisors who constantly surrounded Abdulaziz to help him with everything he needed. With British weapons, money, and advisors, Imam Abdulaziz was able to gradually conquer most of the Arabian Peninsula in a ruthless manner under the banner of Wahhabism to create the Third Saudi-Wahhabi State, known today as Saudi Arabia."

    My mistake.

No mention of the failing Ottoman state or its role. I love how people omit history for their agenda.
