Unlike you I don't think people have to appreciate the different things in life. If it's not in their interest so be it. If you are interested in it then by all means go around checking the good quality stuff but don't judge others for not having the same interests as you.

I don't think that example of goras cooking fits this scenario. That example is based on bigotry, thinking everything in muslim culture is better than what those kaffir white people make. You are more like those art snobs who feel people don't appreciate traditional art any more and don't take into account that others simply have different interests.

When I said people should appreciate, I don't neccessarily mean that people should go out of their way to try different things. What I mean is people should not slag things off because it is not what they are used to and appreciate that it is good quality and just because they don't like it, it is not bad. I think the example I gave does fit the scenario. Its like what I said before about somebody looking at a piece of modern art and saying "that is shit! You call that art?! Give me a painting or a sculpture anyday". People who know and are into art would be rightfully pissed off at a comment like that.

I get the piss taken out of me and called pretentious all the time because my palate is not limited to Indian cooking, because I don't put red chilli powder in all of my cooking, and because I own an antonio carluccio cookbook! Why do I get the piss taken out of me? Because it is different.

And for the record I drink vodka mixers and alcopops Tongue And a load of other 'kids drinks'. I cant stand beer, wine and a heap of other alcoholic drinks. I just drink to get drunk Wink

That is fair enough, if you drink just to get drunk. When people take cocaine, they don't have it for the flavour or the texture. I apologise for sounding like a twat before.

Berbs and Peru, I am not a proud person and I admit that I was wrong about alcohol, and looking back on my posts I did sound like a bit of a twat! I take my hat off to the two of you, you definitely won that argument! Although I still agree that there is a difference between good alcohol and bad alcohol, each to their own.

I stand by what I was saying about food though!  Tongue

Of course there is good food and lame food, but ultimately food is food and once the zombies attack it will be scarce, and I think a tin of tesco's value baked beans will be gourmet to us then lol.  Tongue

Well, I was gonna tell ya to head to the Jack of Both Sides in Reading and maybe you could find someone there who could hook you up, but after googling it, I see it's now closed.

When I was 18, 19 or so and visiting my mom there, she warned me to stay away from that pub as it was considered the worst in the city, full of dangerous criminals and such-- so of course, that's the first place I went (I mean, seriously, what was she thinking? She really should have known better than to tell me that), besides, it was the closest pub to where my mom was livin then, just down the street.

I walk in lookin sharp in my gray double-breasted suit, white shirt and white tie, hair slicked straight back, and this Bahamian pimp calls over to me "Hey mon!" Me: "How ya doin?" Him: "Where you from mon?" Me: "U.S., Boston", Him: "Come over here and sit with me I buy you a drink", so I walk over to his table where he's rolling a joint (laced with coke) with his white skank bitches on each side of him, the guy is dripping with gold from his neck and each finger-- "Ya mon, I see you walkin in here dressed so smart, I think this is a guy I want to meet. I got somethin here I know you gonna like". He gives me a few tokes off the bone and it was a bad decision. I was already quite drunk when I took the pull, and after I headed out to get to the next pub, as I'm walking I start sweating bullets and feel like my hearts gonna explode right outta my chest, but bein the trooper I am, I still made it to the next pub (more an American-style bar, really, damned if I can remember the name or where in Reading it was) and managed to grab one more drink before I finally decided I had to get the fuck home.

Sorry for the nostalgic tangent, but I figured if there's anyone here who lived in Reading during the 90s, they might appreciate the story.

    fuck you

It is not entirely subjective. I would eat a big mac over gourmet escargots, but that is because i prefer the taste of a big mac over gourmet escargots. I still know that gourmet escargots are good quality food and a big mac is a big pile of crap.

A Big Mac is a pile of crap, but so are snails imo.  Then again, you can have a gourmet hamburger, as people like Chef Hubert Keller have shown us (see also last month's issue of Saveur).

If somebody looks at a good piece of modern art and says "you call that art?! That is shit! Art is like a painting, or a sculpture. This isn't art", I'm sure that would annoy people who are into art. Likewise, with food, it annoys me when people don't appreciate that something is good food and will just slag it off, and won't even try it.

That is a pretty petty thing to be annoyed about, but we all have those things.  People like what they like, and some modern art - a lot of it - is utterly pretentious shite.  The thing is, whatever you are snobby about, what is your attitude towards others?  I think the music most people listen to is utter crap, but if it's what they like, who am I to tell them they have shitty taste? Whatever makes you happy.  A person isn't more intelligent because they listen to Airborne Toxic Event or eat snails or enjoys performance art over Beyonce, fried chicken, and the latest Michael Bay movie.

That is fair enough, you can eat or drink what you like the taste of. But there are definite differences in qualityn and it is not entirely subjective. The burgers at Gourmet Burger Kitchen are definitely better than the burgers at Mcdonalds. Cristal is definitely better than Lanson Black Label. Absolut 100 is definitely better than Glen's Vodka.

That is why I distinguished between find food and wine and good food and wine.  What tastes good to someone is entirely subjective, but one can acknowledge the rarity of ingredients or the amount of craft that goes into, say, a plate of food at Jean Georges, even if one cannot stand the smell or flavours of the food at his table.

Furthermore, I think everyone is guilyt I think everyone looks down their noses at different people over different things. I think everyone on this forum is guilty of directly or indirectly calling Muslims stupid at times. That is looking down your noses at Muslims  as if we are better than them.

: shrug : I've no problem admitting I was a massive idiot and asshole when I was Muslim.  I'm still an asshole and an idiot, the difference is that I no longer subscribe to a belief system that tells me I am superior to all other beings on the earth and that I need to turn off my brain in order to have eternal bliss.

I didn't judge you or anybody negatively for having vodka and redbulls, and I apologise if it came accross that way. I was just talking about kids who don't appreciate anything good and just drikn vodka and coke, vodka and redbull and alcopops so they don't have to taste any alcohol.

I don't look down my nose at them as such, and I certainly do not think that they are bad people because of their tastes. That would be ridiculous. But it is just one of those things that irritates me and I know that makes me a bit of a twat!

I think alcohol tastes vile and the only reason I indulge in it at all is because things I prefer are not legal.  So I guess I won't be inviting you to drink mojitos with me!

I dislike this sort of mentality.  Yes, there is such a thing as art history, studying the techniques and social, cultural, and technological changes that go into the development of aesthetic movements within the visual arts.  But "people who know art?"  That's like "people who know Islam" being pissy because ammi people like us look at it and say "What a crap belief system!"  Did you need to study ibn Arabi and Ghazali in depth for years and years to know that Islam is shit?  A person can look at a painting or an installation and decide for him or herself whether or not it's mind blowing or it's shite. Fuck that sort of invented authority that would tell someone he or she doesn't know what he or she likes, especially in something like art.  Those are the same authorities that tell people today that they are wrong to find beauty, or inspiration or transcendence in European painting from the 15th or 16th centuries because it is an example of white Christian male hegemony.  Sometimes, somethin's just purty.  (And I was an art major in my early years!)

There is a difference between bigotry and conformity and saying that because someone doesn't like the sorts of things that upper class white society has deemed fine and good that they're a rube.

Use words that people would use to distinguish between the ingredients and the amount of work, rather than "good" and "bad."  I know Boone's Farm is low-grade alcohol, and that some fucking pino grigiot from some fucking place is probably fine wine.  Good or bad?  That is subjective.

There is a difference between preferences and "good and bad". Preferences are subjective but "good and bad" is not. Someone might prefer driving a Lada Riva to a Rolls Royce Corniche. Their preference is a Lada Riva, but a Rolls Royce Corniche is still the better car. I would think that person was a bit of an idiot for prefering a Lada Riva to a Roller, but its up to them what they like. I wasn't talking about preferences, but I was talking difference between good and bad food. Traditional village cooking tends to be very good food, as does food in top restaurants, because very good ingredients are used and time and effort goes into them. Mass produced ready meals and fast food tends to be pretty bad food. People can like eating this stuff - i like eating donner kebabs and burgers etc - and they can even prefer eating it to traditional village cooking or food from top restaurants. But to say it is better is as ridiculous as saying a Lada Riva is better than a Rolls Royce Corniche. If that makes me a snob, I'm a snob.

When did I even hint at the idea in bold? In fact, I think nouvelle cuisine is pretty ridiculous, and I like proper traditional cooking from all over the world. The fact that I particularly enjoy Italian cooking and own an Antonio Carluccio cookbook does not suggest that I believe that "if someone doesn't like the sorts of things that upper class white society has deemed fine and good that they're a rube."

Of course there is. I'm sure most people realise that even if you don't think they do. But I have to repeat what Manat said, you are using the wrong language when you say 'good' and 'bad'. Just because somebody put a load of effort into something doesn't mean it wont taste like shite. Good and bad are subjective. Something utterly cheap with the minimal amount of effort can still be good.

Once I left the religion, my parents would always remind me of that..fuck, so embarrassing.
