I see many Kurds praising the founder and leader of the PKK Abdullah Ocalan who is atheist, the constitution of the Rojava cantons gives equal rights to all.
Are the Kurds the only people in that area who tolerate atheists and in the case of Ocalan even praise them, are there any other atheists in the Islamic world who are praised by muslims?
Just about everything I read says the Kurds are majority sunni muslims,Harun Yahya says they are communist atheists as do some Chehens who have gone there to teach religion to the Kurds and save them from godless communism.
I don't see many hijabs with YPJ fighters, from what I can find there has been no census on Kurds religion for over 30 years, the Kurds are persecuted in many places by sunni and shia Islam.
What are the views on Kurdish religious demographics from ex muslims here, are they muslims who don't take Islam literally or is atheism growing there?
Why are the Kurds hated and persecuted, is it because they don't appear to take Islam as seriously as other muslims?
The Kurds are overall, in a geographically desirable yet hard to reach place. The Sunnis persecuted them because they wanted their land. The Shia forcibly converted them. The Turks denied them any sort of cultural identity at all. There have traditionally been Yezdi, Christian, Jewish, Muslim of all types in Kurdistan. They have a strong cultural identity, and religion is second. The only effective champions of Kurdish rights since the president of Kurdistan was hung have been Socialist or Communist, politically. This is true. Many Kurds do take Islam very seriously, but I would say less Muslim Kurds believe in implementing Shariah than you would expect, because they know what it is like to live under it in Iran. Because the region of Kurdistan is mountainous, the borders have been porous, and Kurds hop them all the time and communicate readily with each other. They know which country under which sort of government is better to live in, and why. They are very regime savvy, and would not welcome any religious or non religious dictatorship, unless it was under their own beloved party leader (whoever that might be, and there are so many, that it would never fly). I do not know why they would be hated. It seems a prejudice, as they are no different from any other population, save suffering more persecution in their homeland than most populations do.
