    How should I, or how do Muslims, determine what the majority view on any given topic is?

    Ideally it is supposed to be the consensus of the whole Muslim Ummah - but in reality it is the consensus of the scholars of whatever sect, mathhab, group or view you follow.

    I once heard a scholar say that the only thing that there has ever been true and unanimous consensus upon was the Qibla.

    Wikipedia defers to Sheikh Google on most matters.
