  • Statistics on the Family Abandonment of Apostates
     OP - June 19, 2016, 01:18 PM

Last Christmas I told my friend that 25% of Muslims in the UK support the death penalty for apostasy and also that Muslims who leave the religion are typically abandoned by their family. He did not believe me and was somewhat incredulous at this claim. So I sent him an email with a link to the poll that contains the 25% support for apostasy data. I couldn't find any compiled data on abandonment of apostates. The best I was able to do is find articles in the BBC, Guardian and other mainstream newspapers on the topic and extract the data.

The articles contained fourteen instances of Muslims leaving Islam.

My question is: Does anyone know of any sources that give data on abandonment or could be used to compile such data?

Sulaiman Vali; in fear of his life; disowned by family because he wouldn't pretend to be a Muslim
Nasreen, ex-Muslim for 9 years, but too scared to tell her parents
Imtiaz Shams, threats of violence, disowned
Sara, disowned and kicked out of house at 17; subsequently speaks with mother and sister; father will not have contact
Sofia Allam, father threatened to kill her; beaten by mother and forced out of home
Tasnim, ex-Muslim for 7 years, but too scared to tell her family
Aisha, hid apostasy from her family for years; was forced by her family to repent when it was disclosed, but still is a disbeliever privately
Hanif, staunch atheist for more than a decade, but too afraid to tell his family including his wife who he was married to in an arranged marriage
Shahid Abbas, secular debater, but too scared to tell his family he is an apostate
    Maha Kamal, disowned by parents
    Muz, was not disowned
Halima, too scared to tell her parents she is an apostate
Aylisha, father held knife to her throat and threatened to kill her, kicked out of home at age 14
Afzal Khan, disowned by family, friends threatened to kill him
Aaliyah, disowned by family who told her that other family members may kill her
Nissar Hussein (apostate family), multiple bricks through window, car torched, death threats from 'community'
"Hannah", daughter of imam has had to move 45 times after converting to Christianity; saturated with death threats including her father arriving at her house with 40 men to kill her

It would be very difficult to compile accurate statistical data for this. Most ex muslims are very much hidden, especially those who do not live in Western countries. There is a huge gap between the information that we can get, and what is actually out there.

This scares me a lot. Personally, the only person I have to worry about is my father, but I am perpetually afraid of him discovering me. I think there is a possibility of violence, disownment at least. I feel I can only be safe if I'm living in a completely different city.

Thanks. It is an issue, although we can help by making our voices heard more publicly. If we made ourselves noticed, then people may be more encouraged to come out.

I was watching a few "tubes" as Yeez calls them, earlier, of ex Muslims speaking openly about their apostasy. It really is inspiring to watch. Don't think I could do that though, it's not my way of doing things.

    Yes, YouTube Wink

I started by viewing the Faith to Faithless video on the CEMB forum homepage, then watched a few more from there.

This looks like an interesting debate, too. Found it from another thread here, though haven't watched much yet as I'm not alone in the flat.

I understand there are issues in collecting data, but whatever data can be collected will obviously be more accurate than guesses that may currently be made.

I am involved in statistics professionally and I would like to compile data on this topic. I'll make a separate post about this when I have more time, but if anyone would like to submit anonymous data, send me a PM; or if you have ideas on the nature of data to be collected.

While his isn't a quantitative study, you could do worse than try and get in touch with Simon Cottee (the search function should help you).
