    Quote
Late on Friday, dozens of protesters attacked police near the Presidential Palace as officers shot tear gas and water cannons overhead. The protesters called for Ahok's death, shouting "kill Ahok" and "kill Ahok for insulting Islam." Some also carried placards demanding his execution.

Earlier in the day, police estimated 200,000 people marched from Istiqlal Mosque in Central Jakarta to the Presidential palace. The march was largely peaceful.

"peace" in Islam means you should be executed.

    Quote
In a press conference held after the clashes, President Joko Widodo -- also known as Jokowi -- promised legal actions against Ahok and demanded protesters to "go back to their home where they came from, orderly."

    This is the "blasphemy claims":
    Quote
In a campaign speech, Ahok told Indonesians that the religious verse did not prohibit them from voting for a non-Muslim. His interpretation of the text is what elicited protests and charges of blasphemy.

Just a reminder that all public schools in Indonesia are pretty much madrasah now, and they only teach Islam. Muslims have insulted other religions in Indonesia so many times already and nothing happened.

    Quote
"Pluralist politicians, like President Jokowi, were silent," Jones wrote at the beginning of November.
"No one said, 'Let's stop this in it tracks.' Neither the President nor Vice-President did anything to try to cool tempers."

    This is a "moderate muslim":

    Quote
Former president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, whose son is running against Ahok, made a speech two days ago calling for the governor to be prosecuted to placate the Islamist opposition and quell the protests.

Some interesting discussion on /r/indonesia subreddit, just to see other people's opinions about this:

This one is good with opinions from Chinese Indonesians:

But I disagree with most of them. Why the fuck are we okay with being killed?

    Quote
All I can say to you guys is 98 has long passed, don't let today reset all the progress we've made. It took years to fix something like this on social level. Proving who is wrong or right on reddit won't make things better any sooner.

It's things like this that makes me angry. Nothing was fixed. On 98, people were killed and women were raped en-masse, and nothing was done to anyone. Prabowo, which was the suspect almost won Presidential candidate 4 years ago. Nothing was fixed. Nothing.
Nobody should be okay with this. It hasn't passed. It just happened again.

Blind optimism kills. If you are okay with being killed and you do nothing to stop it (=apathy) then don't be surprised when they come to your house and burn it down.

One of those times when I'm so glad that I'm not in Indonesia anymore. The most peaceful country on earth Smiley

Gov. Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, commonly known as Ahok

    Quote
Gov. Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, commonly known as Ahok, is alleged to have insulted Islam by criticizing his opponents' use of a Quranic verse in a stump speech. Ahok is a member of Indonesia's Christian minority.

At least 160 protestors and 79 police officers were injured during the clashes.

Indonesian Gov. Basuki Tjahaja Purnama is an extremely interesting case to study in the modern times with reference to  "Islam and its political side"

    Quote
Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (EYD: Basuki Cahaya Purnama, Chinese: 鍾萬學; Tjung Ban Hok; pinyin: Zhōng Wànxué; born June 29, 1966) is an Indonesian politician serving as the 17th Governor of Jakarta since November 14, 2014. Basuki was inaugurated by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) on November 18, 2014.[2] He was a legislator in the Indonesian People's Representative Council and Regent of East Belitung.  He is also known by his Hakka Chinese nickname, Ahok (Chinese: 阿學).

Basuki was also a Komisi II House of Representatives member for the 2009-2014 office term. However, he resigned from the position in 2012 to run for Lieutenant Governor of Jakarta.

Basuki is the second governor with Chinese ancestry and the second Christian governor of Jakarta, following Henk Ngantung, who was governor during the period 1964–65

    Quote
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basuki_Tjahaja_Purnama

    Jakarta's deputy governor

In 2011, Basuki considered campaigning for Jakarta governor as an independent. However, he decided not to run as he was pessimistic about his chances of getting 250 thousand signatures, the requirement for running as an independent gubernatorial candidate in Jakarta. He then ran with Joko Widodo in the 2012 election as Widodo's running mate. Jokowi and Basuki won 1.847.157 (42,60%) votes in the first round, and 2.472.130 (53,82%) in the second round, defeating incumbernt governor Fauzi Bowo.

The ticket was nominated by the Indonesian Democratic Party – Struggle (PDI-P) and the Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra).  On 10 September 2014, Basuki left Gerindra due to a dispute on a proposed bill on regional elections. Since then he has been politically unaffiliated.

    Governorship

When Joko Widodo took a temporary leave from his post as Jakarta governor to run for President, Basuki became the acting Governor of Jakarta from 1 June 2014. Following Jokowi's victory, he succeeded him as governor and was sworn into office on 18 November 2014.

In a parliamentary democracy with Muslim majority population and if Islam is state religion a non-Muslim can never become elected official.. ., Democracy is a number game.  I  would love to see the examples of a political figures around the globe in any Islamic nation where a non-Muslim gets elected through a UNRESERVED parliamentary elections

A lot of word choices from western news sites confuses me a lot. It's not just you, yeez.

For example, the word "peaceful". Is inciting hatred against minority peaceful? Would they call a Trump rally that has gone violent and demanded an execution against blasphemers to be "peaceful"?

    Also, "minority"....

    haha...ha...ha...............................................................

I guess anything can be "minority" if you're just counting numbers to mislead people...
