An amazing anti-depression patch has been developed that works so well some patients can't even remember what their illness felt like before they started treatment.
Seven out of ten patients who used the patch improved in little over a month.
The patch - which delivers a powerful anti-depressant 24 hours a day - works very quickly. It allows the drug to seep into the bloodstream without having to first pass through the stomach and liver, reducing the risk of side effects.
'The results were stunning,' says Dr Alexander Bodkin, who led a clinical trial of the patch.
Results from the trial showed that 72 per cent of patients treated with the new patch recovered after six weeks, with many showing what is described as ' remarkable improvement' much sooner, sometimes in days.
The transdermal patch, which works in a similar way to a nicotine patch, is based on an effective anti-depressant called selegiline from a class of drugs called monoamine oxidase inhibitors or MAOIs, which are infrequentlyprescribed because of occasional serious side effects such as strokes and extremely high blood pressure when it is taken orally.
'Now we have a way of getting an MAOI antidepressant to the brain without interfering with the digestive system,' says Dr Bodkin................................................
