I was going to point out the same fact, but I didn't want to be accused of "bigotry" again. Who knows, I might be an evil conservative masquerading as an apostate without knowing it. Possible, yes?

Plus (much as I know how people will get all hyper sensitive about it  ( Islam fucking sucks big time, why on earth would I ever consider exposing my child to that craP?

FOR PEOPLE TO LIKE ME?  fuck that

FOR PEOPLE TO RESPECT ME?  Fuck you, you morons.

I just don't get why anyone would throw away their life on such a bullshit ideology and then turn around and let their child be exposed to the same crap too.  Roll Eyes

Arabic lessons are called arabic lessons, but the title cracks me the helll up because in reality arabic lessons are merely quran lessons and an ex muslim who thinks thats totally fine and dandy is a bit far out from what i see as reaoanble behaviour after deconversions.

It's not as simple as that, she has grown up in Islam, he's not 'exposing' her to it, her mum is a muslim for a start. If she's made a friend who has invited her, it'd be a bit mean to start with the 'I'm not having you brainwashed' bit, especially under the circumstances or him encouraging it in the first place.

The reason you might find that far out is because you're not looking at it from his pov and circs. You seem to have it in for Hass lately.

It seems that Hassan believes he can take on the 1400yrs old memeplexes of islam. Good luck, if anyone can do it it's him.

On the other side, I believe Hassan is in a tough place, he raised a good point that if he denies her, it might get her more attached and he is the best person to judge this. I had a Christian arab friend of mine who grew up in canada, and she was obsessed with egypt, egyptian songs, egyptian singers, arabic songs, arabic singers, she would rarely listen to western music.

Eventually she got on some trip to goto egypt and teach computers over there. She got to see how it really is. Two yrs later, she came back engaged to a coptic guy, and between the Two of them and it's been few years now they barely own 2 good Arabic music CDs anymore.

Hassan, good luck putting a good head on her shoulder, it is the only thing you can do. After that, she will have to go and see for herself and pick what she likes. The big test will be the muslim boyfriend of course, but boyfriends are the banes of dads in any culture.

My 7 year-old daughter has a friend from school who is Muslim - I think that's partly why they became friends.

Her friend is older than her and gone to another school now. My daughter really misses her and got in touch. Her friend said they could meet-up at the Mosque after school tomorrow - as she goes to Islamic classes there.

I have agreed to take my daughter along.

    Should be fun grin12

You sound like a very sensible parent.  Take care of your daughter, and Allah(swt) will take care of her religion.  The best will happen to both of you, Inshallah.

Hass if she kept pestering you about smoking would you allow it?  Would you sit down and worry that if you don;t give in to her curiousity to  smoke it will romanticise the whole thing or are you sensible enough to realise that when it comes to certain situations she is the child and you are the parent?

No, he's sensible enough to realise that her smoking or going to her friends Mosque are such different and unrelated topics you cant use them as a comparison.

Anyway, you're experiences of Islam are all very negative, not all of Hass's are. You're bound to be more trigger happy as you have more to resent than he does. Having said that, he did ask.

So basically you are going to deny your kids religious education. Don't cry when they turn out to be Scientology fans.

Don't worry so much Tut, a society of rabid xenu haters are much less dangerous and much more productive then a society of allah's mumeneen.

    What in the hell?

Expressing my opinion to Hass on what I see as a bad judgement call on his part does not mean I have it in for him.

What do you think you ought to teach your kid about religion, Islam, God? What do you think they ought to know? They should be getting some info from their mom (being muslim), how do you talk to your kids about it? How do they handle it?

I don't know how I would like to teach my potential kids. I think it'd be cool if they'd be familiar with it, so as not to fall for something blindly due to some spiritual craving later in life... be more critical... Maybe have them attend classes, and add my 'supplement' afterwards, asking them to think critically, study deeper issues...

I'm not sure how to handle it, Awais - I'm just making it up as I go along - I mean 'thinking on my feet' - I speak with my older kids very openly and tell them exactly why I don't believe.

As for the younger ones, I don't speak at length to them but occasionally make a comment about something as it arises. For example they were fighting in the car on the way back from school and one said "Your going to Hell" the other other replied "No you're going to Hell." (They bring Hell up a lot - partly coz they have a Mormon friend who seems to bring it up a lot) - so I just told them; "I don't believe in Hell"

I'm quite clear with my kids about not being a muslim, but I am also clear with them that when they are older and have sampled ALL religions then they are free to choose what they want whilst repeating in my head (*please don't choose muslim, please don't choose muslim, please don't choose muslim*)  Cheesy

A somalian muslim asked my eldest son where we were from, and my son said "sorry, but we are not muslims"  Cheesy

The guy replied "I didn't ask your religion, just where you were from" and the whole time I was mortified/in a panic.

    It's okay.  Smiley
One of the many disadvantages of being Somalian is that Somali people practically all Muslim so you can't go declare that you're not Muslim without strange looks and glares. Arabs, other Africans, Asians, and so on have the possibility of being many different religions but if you're Somali you can only be Muslim. lol It's funny because you can distinguish Somalis from other Africans/blacks pretty easily.

But do most Moroccans look the same? Don't Algerians look similar?

maybe they do but I have never mistaken any other arab race for a moroccan, I can usually with 100% accuracy tell from the looks whether someone is moroccon or not.
