The fact is that traditional/classical Shari'ah Law did institute the death penalty for apostates and many Muslims still take that view - just look at Saudi Arabia.

However this guy is good example of the way some modern Muslims are re-interpreting the laws on apostasy and creating a new Islam.

I'm glad Muslims are doing this. But until he convinces traditional/literalist/Salafi Muslims then his words mean very little.

Well, for every person I've heard say that this is only meant for treason, I've heard another say "Within an Islamic state, the penalty for apostacy is death". Even just today on this site, I saw a video about Dawkins, and an Imam or someone said exactly that.

The only example I can think of right now was that of a group of kryptoChristians in Islamic Spain, who 'came out of the closet' so to speak. Despite not wanting to kill them, the authorities reluctantly put them to death.
