  • Muslims Against Sharia
     OP - March 09, 2009, 03:44 AM

I found this website and it gave me a warm, hopeful feeling.

    http://www.reformislam.org/

    Quote
    Equality
Islam is one of the many of the world's religions. There will be no Peace and Harmony in the World if Muslims and non-Muslims do not have equal rights. Islamic supremacy doctrine is just as repulsive as Aryan supremacy doctrine. History clearly shows what happens to the society whose members consider themselves above other peoples. All moderate Muslims must repudiate the mere notion of Islamic supremacy.

    Sharia
Sharia Law must be abolished, because it is incompatible with norms of modern society.

    Outdated practices
Any practices that might have been acceptable in the Seventh Century; i.e., stoning, cutting off body parts, marrying and/or having sex with children or animals, must be condemned by every Muslim.

Although I do believe that the Sharia being incompatible with norms of modern society can be applied to religion in general....I do like their views on equal rights between Muslims and non-Muslims though.

They have a section on outdated verses....and they want them to be removed from the Quran, which sort of contradicts the whole idea of the Quran not being edited...

"... sort of contradicts the whole idea of the koran not being edited "

That's the problem . Obviously it's a positive thing that there are muslims prepared to publicly question aspects of their religion , but as soon as you start to do that the whole thing falls apart , like a house of cards .
All the ' holy books'  are full of things which are outdated ,  ludicrous , bizarre and occasionally malevolent . Most people recognise this , apart from a few fanatics who either delude themselves or drive themselves mad trying to reconcile the irreconciliable . But believers aren't supposed to question the book at all.
I have a hard time understanding how intelligent people can cleave to a belief system that makes no sense

I doubt they ever were Muslim, too many misconceptions about Islamic doctrine on their website:

    Quote from: Muslims against Sharia
Any practices that might have been acceptable in the Seventh Century... marrying and/or having sex with children or animals

Muhammad in the 7th century never condoned bestiality; that was only fatwa by Ayatollah Khomeni - hardly applicable to the majority of Muslims.

"It may happen that the enemies of Islam may consider it expedient not to take any action against Islam, if Islam leaves them alone in their geographical boundaries... But Islam cannot agree to this unless they submit to its authority by paying Jizyah"

Unless they were Shia muslims, in which case they would presumably believe that a fatwa from the Ayatollah Khomeini had some basis in the Qur'an or hadith?

Most importantly, this M.A.S.H. site only attracts interest from non-Muslims interested in "reforming" Islam. Genuine Muslims can presumably see that editing the Koran as the M.A.S.H. guys have done is unacceptably compromising their religion.

The Koran in fact contains numerous warnings against accepting the message in part or altering it in any way (al-Baqara verse 85 for instance). No serious believer in Islam could set out to rewrite Koran.

Which is ridiculous because of the whole abrogated verses thing!  wacko
