  • Feth Gulen's Article on Scientific Facts in the Quran!
     OP - April 13, 2009, 03:19 PM

I found this article in Islamonline, its by Feth Gulen, expounding on the scientific facts in the Quran.

He does the usual Muslim  icon_blahblah icon_blahblah about how the Quran is perfectly in accordance with modern science, but then he says that scientific facts should only accepted if they're in accordance with the Quran, because while science can be imperfect, Allah is perfect.  Roll Eyes

    http://www.islamonline.net/servlet/Satellite?c=Article_C&cid=1158658453507&pagename=Zone-English-Living_Shariah%2FLSELayout

Feth Gulen, "It is also wrong to accept science or scientific facts as absolute, for such things are subject to change. At best, they only support what the Qur'an says. In no way can the unchangeable and eternal Qur'an be confirmed by that which is changeable and temporary. Given this, Muslims should use science only as a tool to awaken sleeping or confused minds.

Science and scientific facts are true only as long as they agree with the Qur'an and the authentic Hadith. "

Wouldn't that be a huge impediment to all progress if all new "science" is discarded if it contradicts the Quran?  finmad

In practise that just means they will reinterpret the Qur'an and hadeeth to look as if it supports science whenever possible.  It also means muslim scientists will lag behind everybody else because they won't be able to pursue free enquiry without fear of committing some kind of blasphemy.  Sad for them, but it won't make any difference to science whatsoever.

    Sahih Bukhari,
    Volume 5, Book 58, Number 200:

    Narrated Abu Huraira:
... in the company of the Prophet ... I walked with him and asked, "What about the bone and the animal dung?" He said, "They are of the food of Jinns."

Sahih Bukhari is the most authentic hadith collection.

Great!  Afro Now we have to accept that the world is full of invisible, shit eating ghosts!

The Islamist JDP party in Turkey has entered a frenzy of arresting and/or discharging scientists, dissident journalists, and left-wing thinkers right now. They invented a conspiracy theory of evil leftists and crypto-Jews secretly controlling Turkey. To purge Turkey of this imaginary malady, they are arresting anybody who has publicly opposed JDP.

Moderate Islam is not the solution, it is the problem.

I remember once, someone was telling me that there were no jinns in their house, because they had left some bones on the roof and they had not been eaten!!!

Maybe that, or maybe there are no jinns full stop!

Must be there are jinns, authentic hadith says so, even moderate Feth Gulen says authentic hadiths>scientific facts, so there must be jinns!  dance

Have they now? And this was the party that claimed they were moderates. I read something the other day about some of their antics but didn't realise they were taking things further than this.

    The battle for Turkey's soul

TURKEY is the Islamic world's leading secular democracy. It spends a large proportion of its income on scientific research and aims to match that of the European Union by 2013. Turks like science: one of the country's top-selling magazines is the popular science monthly Bilim ve Teknik ("Science and Technology"), published by the country's scientific funding agency T?BITAK. The best-seller is a science monthly for kids.

But Turkey is also a hotbed of creationism. So when a cover feature on Darwin planned for the March issue of Bilim ve Teknik was pulled at the last minute, it caused an uproar. Turkish scientists suspected that pressure from religious politicians had led to censorship. Is Turkey changing course? Does this bode ill for science in the Muslim world?

It depends. Seen in context, the incident could be a good sign, as the inevitable growing pains of a country adapting to a scientific world view. The key question is which way the process goes now. What happens in Turkey is important because its battles could be the first of many.

The rest of the article is linked from the title. For the government to pull a stunt like this is incredibly stupid and will only hold Turkey back.

Devious, treacherous, murderous, neanderthal, sub-human of the West. bunny

Yes, they invented a crypto-terrorist organisation called "Ergenekon" to justify their inquisition. According to JDP propaganda, this evil community of socialists, nationalists, and Kemalists are responsible for all the evils of modern Turkey.

The great irony is that Ergenekon was an actual organisation that existed in Turkey a few decades ago. Being a far-right clade, they targetted socialists and other pro-Soviet sympathisers... Now that the original Ergenekon has probably disappeared, JDP is using a net of conspiracy theories, Islamist media, and religious tariqaahs to disseminate false information. Their methods are quite similar to the Inquisition. In both Ergenekon cases, one true and one imaginary, the secular Left have been the actual victims.

Yesterday, the inquisition bands of JDP arrested three university rectors, all secularists. Another prominent victim was Turkan Saylan, an elderly woman suffering from cancer, who is the founder of the Civil Society of Supporting Modern Life, among many other things. She was treated badly, according to some sources. Apparently, nothing is inviolable in the eyes of these thugs.

QUOTE: Feth Gulen, "It is also wrong to accept science or scientific facts as absolute, for such things are subject to change.

Actually I think most scientists would agree with that first part. It is the basic foundation of science that anything put forward as hypothesis  should be tested , re-tested and then tested again and if other evidence comes along look at it again and test the theory again and adapt to new findings.

Now compare this with attempts at testing religious claims that have absolutely no evidence

According to the polls only 1.6 % of Americans are athiests. So what gives you the right to call the other 80% morons?'
