  • Why did Prophet Muhammad marry his niece Aisha but refuse his other niece?
     OP - September 16, 2009, 02:57 PM

Prophet Muhammad married Aisha also she was his niece, he said that it didn't matter!

Sahih Bukhari ,Volume 7, Book 62, Number 18:
    Narrated 'Ursa:
The Prophet asked Abu Bakr for 'Aisha's hand in marriage. Abu Bakr said "But I am your brother." The Prophet said, "You are my brother in Allah's religion and His Book, but she (Aisha) is lawful for me to marry."

    Sahih Bukhari,Volume 7, Book 62, Number 37:
    Narrated Ibn 'Abbas:
It was said to the Prophet, "Won't you marry the daughter of Hamza?" He said, "She is my foster niece (brother's daughter). "

Why did he marry one girl, infact overrode Abu Bakr's objections to marrying Ayesha  explaining that it didn't matter if she was his niece, but refuse another citing the  same reason?

Was Hamza's daughter ugly? Had pox marks or something? Huh?

Because Abu Bakr wasn't actually his brother. He was his brother from another mother. Hamza was his foster brother because they had both been suckled by the same woman, and thus, a marriage to Hamza's daughter would be considered incestuous.

Hmm, this makes sense. Of course, the foster mother thing is foolish, but that isn't relevant here.

He was Mo's foster brother, they had a brother hood pact between them!

Pre Islamic Arabs didn't marry the daughters of the men with whom they had brotherhood pacts, which was why Abu Bakr objected to the marriage at first!

Even Hamza's daughter wasn't his niece, e & Hamza were breast fed by the same wet nurse, the Arabs believed that milk creates blood ties!

    That's odd.

Didnt Muhammad take Ali as his brother and made Abu Bakr the brother of Umar ibn Khattab one fine day in Madinah when commanded by Allah to choose brothers ?

Abu Bakr was not his foster brother. He says "brother" in the "brother from another mother" sense.

There used to be a custom in arabia for 2 people to become blood-brothers. It is said that muhammad annulled this custom by marrying aisha. Just like he annulled adoption by marrying the wife of his son-in-law. For the legal purposes of the time, Muhammad and Abu Bakr were known as 2 Brothers.

"Ask the slave girl; she will tell you the truth.' So the Apostle called Burayra to ask her. Ali got up and gave her a violent beating first, saying, 'Tell the Apostle the truth.'"

They were known as brothers but were not recognised as brothers under islamic law. They did not have the same mother or father, nor were they suckled by the same woman. Muhammad said to him that he is his brother in Islam, which I understood as the way Muslims call each other "brother" nowadays.

I was always uncomfortable with the marriage of Zainab and Muhammad. It seemed like a rather slapdash way of abolishing an old custom. I think the ullema made this rule afterwards in order to justify this ruse!
