  • Is this verse [ Surah 19:70-71 ] kind of weird, or is it just me
     OP - September 19, 2009, 07:41 AM

    "And certainly We know best those who are most worthy of being burned therein.  And there is not one of you but shall go into it [hell]; this is an unavoidable decree of your Lord. (19:70-71)"

    ثُمَّ لَنَحْنُ أَعْلَمُ بِالَّذِينَ هُمْ أَوْلَى بِهَا صِلِيًّا {70}
    وَإِن مِّنكُمْ إِلَّا وَارِدُهَا كَانَ عَلَى رَبِّكَ حَتْمًا مَّقْضِيًّا {71}

    Ok, sooooo.... everyone is going to hell? I was wondering, does it mean that everyone goes to hell to check it out, and then the good guys go to paradise... or is it only directed at infidels?

    Its doesnt seem really clear to me, who how the word 'you' is being used

    EDIT:

    This is another translation, with the context

    [Yusufali 19:66] Man says: "What! When I am dead, shall I then be raised up alive?"
    أَوَلَا يَذْكُرُ الْإِنسَانُ أَنَّا خَلَقْنَاهُ مِن قَبْلُ وَلَمْ يَكُ شَيْئًا {67}
    [Yusufali 19:67] But does not man call to mind that We created him before out of nothing?
    فَوَرَبِّكَ لَنَحْشُرَنَّهُمْ وَالشَّيَاطِينَ ثُمَّ لَنُحْضِرَنَّهُمْ حَوْلَ جَهَنَّمَ جِثِيًّا {68}
    [Yusufali 19:68] So, by thy Lord, without doubt, We shall gather them together, and (also) the Evil Ones (with them); then shall We bring them forth on their knees round about Hell;
    ثُمَّ لَنَنزِعَنَّ مِن كُلِّ شِيعَةٍ أَيُّهُمْ أَشَدُّ عَلَى الرَّحْمَنِ عِتِيًّا {69}
    [Yusufali 19:69] Then shall We certainly drag out from every sect all those who were worst in obstinate rebellion against (Allah) Most Gracious.
    ثُمَّ لَنَحْنُ أَعْلَمُ بِالَّذِينَ هُمْ أَوْلَى بِهَا صِلِيًّا {70}
    [Yusufali 19:70] And certainly We know best those who are most worthy of being burned therein.
    وَإِن مِّنكُمْ إِلَّا وَارِدُهَا كَانَ عَلَى رَبِّكَ حَتْمًا مَّقْضِيًّا {71}
    [Yusufali 19:71] Not one of you but will pass over it: this is, with thy Lord, a Decree which must be accomplished.
    ثُمَّ نُنَجِّي الَّذِينَ اتَّقَوا وَّنَذَرُ الظَّالِمِينَ فِيهَا جِثِيًّا {72}
    [Yusufali 19:72] But We shall save those who guarded against evil, and We shall leave the wrong-doers therein, (humbled) to their knees.
    وَإِذَا تُتْلَى عَلَيْهِمْ آيَاتُنَا بَيِّنَاتٍ قَالَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لِلَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَيُّ الْفَرِيقَيْنِ خَيْرٌ مَّقَامًا وَأَحْسَنُ نَدِيًّا {73}
    [Yusufali 19:73] When Our Clear Signs are rehearsed to them, the Unbelievers say to those who believe, "Which of the two sides is best in point of position? Which makes the best show in council?"
    وَكَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا قَبْلَهُم مِّن قَرْنٍ هُمْ أَحْسَنُ أَثَاثًا وَرِئْيًا {74}

    It uses 'them' to refer to 'evil ones', and implies that everyone is going to go to hell (for a short time), and then the cool people get taken out

    Ok, my reading of it would be that it's referring to not one of the bad peeps getting away with it. Seems pretty straightforward if you look past the godified language.

    The reason I bring it up, is because the story is so all over the place, with regards to judgement day and what not, Because it seems to contradict what goes down in other verses about judgement day and hell and ect.

    My reading of it seems to be that, everyone goes and checks out hell, the righteous get taken up, the evil ones have to stay, but I could be reading it wrong

    I see what you mean. Looks to me like "check it out" may be right but we'll have to wait for someone who knows more about it. The "round about Hell" looks to be describing a sightseeing trip, more or less. So everyone rocks up and has a look from the outside ("Hey fuck, check out the flames and stuff!") and the norty peeps get chucked in then everyone else buggers off to the orgy in the sky.

    Actually verse 69 says:
    Then shall We certainly drag out from every sect all those who were worst in obstinate rebellion against (Allah) Most Gracious

    SO at this point he narrows down his statement only to those rebellious against Allah from all the sects. The he continues:

    We know best those who are most worthy of being burned

    Therefore those to be burnt will be the rebellious.

    Verse 71 could be referring to just those who have already been singled out or it could be everyone. A bit vague admittedly. But on Judgement day all will be gathered together and hell will be brought near. So in a way all will approach hell but only the sinful whose faces will be painted black will be dragged and flung into hell.

    Have added a section on hell on my website last week. Any feedback/criticism,errors would be appreciated.

    Knowing Islam is the only true religion we do not allow propagation of any other religion. How can we allow building of churches and temples when their religion is wrong? Thus we will not allow such wrong things in our countries. - Zakir Naik
