  • Sexual violence in the US military
     OP - February 16, 2010, 04:24 PM

"In 2003, in a survey of female veterans conducted by the University of Iowa, funded by the US Department of Defense, 30% of the 500 female veterans interviewed reported an attempted or completed rape."

Terrible to read, the culture has got to change, however tense it is being in a frontline environment. Ironic that the male troops going in are partially trying to free civilian women, at least politically.

Am I the only one who's NOT surprised by this?

Ironic that the male troops going in are partially trying to free civilian women, at least politically.

No they're not. Most of the soldiers don't have especially feminist politics. Many have no politics at all. They are just being soldiers. Some are cool, smart, tolerant folks you'd like to hang out with, others are ignorant, bigoted rednecks you'd want nothing to do with. Some will endeavor to conduct themselves in a moral/ethical manner, while others will see being in a war zone as giving them license to engage in humanity's basest desires-- including rape and murder.

Wars may have just or unjust aims, and some wars may be conducted by the military and political leadership with more attention to behaving in an ethical manner than others. But all wars, by their very nature, will result in injustices, atrocities, and civilian deaths-- the only question is the frequency with which they will happen and how far up the chain of command responsibility goes.

As far as the political aims of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan go, liberating women isn't exactly a top priority.

    Quote
"You're supposed to carry your weapon at all times in a combat zone," she said.

"But I put my weapon down and walked away to smoke a cigarette and that was when I was attacked."

She was then dragged behind some power generators and raped.

"If I had kept my weapon maybe I would have been able to prevent it," she says.

"But if I had used it I would probably have ended up in jail."

She went to the authorities but they told her that if she filed a claim, she would be charged with dereliction of duty for leaving her weapon unattended in a combat zone - an offence for which you can be court-martialled.

So she kept quiet and the man who attacked her went unpunished.

"It would be my word over his and they are not going to take my word over his," she said.

Grrrr...fuckin assholes. They should be imprisoned themselves.

    fuck you

If she would have keep her weapon that is one "friendly fire" incident I would be happy about.

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

Typical, this happens all over the world. Does not matter how "civilized" you may seem.

Perhaps these women should wear the beautiful, modest, dignified, niqab and be safer Huh???
