Simple question, which is more important to you?

I am well aware they are not necessarily mutually exclusive, but often they can be.

i dont know if its really such a simple question... my choice depends on the case. i can think of some in which truth is better, and others in which happiness is.. id have to list them all down and pick which comes more often lol

I prefer truth over happiness. I would rather be told the truth then be told a lie just to make me feel better.

We keep hearing about how Jack Straw or the French government have mentioned the veil and our doing so puts us in the same boat as them. How so? I want a ban on the burka, neqab and child veiling.

A good example of this is to say for example your parents were sentenced to death for torturing and killing children , and you were adopted at birth. Your adopted parents never told you of your parents grave crimes, not that they were your real parents.

You lived as happy as any normal child or adult. Did they do the wrong thing?

Are white lies a good thing? My best friend from childhood actually has a child from his partners previous relationship, and makes an almost perfect and loving dad.

The boy is now 14 years old, and still thinks he's his real dad.

Yeah that the problem with his particular case. Althought I look at it this way, if he does eventually find out when he is in his mid-20s, or they tell him then at least, then it'd probably take him a couple of years to get over.

Compare that to his first formative 25 years being comfortable in the knowledge that his dad was always been there for him, loved him, and had not deserted him at birth?

Truth.
Happiness is not eternal and the truth will hit home eventually. Knowing it first hand is better.

Deep question man.

Truth might cause unhappiness in the short term, but in the long term, it usually is the best way to be - truthful living leads to awakening of your consciousness and conscience and that can be the way to long term happiness.

The only exception to this is if I accidentally cheat on my partner - in which case - truth sucks and 'ignorance' a.k.a her happiness shall prevail

(joking apart - I'd say you wing it ad hoc - and it all depends on the situation - but overall - over the long terms truthfulness must actually lead to self-awareness and happiness)

In general I agree with my assessment, but it is one of those moral quandaries that make for good Star Trek episodes and good movies. The whole morality of the movie Dark Knight was based on it. When it comes to the big issues like religion, I will take the fact that we are alone in the universe, that there isn't a mythical magical place afterward. This may sound depressing, but the truth has opened me to a lot more.

Honestly I am just a person who wants to know the whole truth, no matter what. But like Billy said there are so many complexities that it makes for great movies, stories, and situations

Yeah me too, in the context of religion, you're right - its opened my mind up to so much more and I no longer live in fear of hell, nor do I feel obliged to perform the perfunctory boring rituals....
