     OP - October 13, 2010, 07:28 AM

I know it sounds like an oxymoron (yes I’m being an asshole) but check this site out.

    http://maniacmuslim.com/

I remember a few years ago I came across a satire site run by a muslim dude. It was actually quite funny back then. Perhaps this is the same site? He would write funny articles about Islamic topics and have drawings as well.

Anyways I want to point to this article:

    Quote
Muslims Cancel Eid to Please America

    Written by: Hamzah Moin

New York – In a move that was expected by many people, Muslims around the world have canceled their religious celebration known as Eid ul-Fitr to accommodate American sensitivities. “It was a natural thing to do,” said Imam Tariq Shakir, the lesser-known back-up Imam of Ground Zero Mosque, “Can you imagine what would happen if a bunch of Muslims were hooting and laughing on September 11th?”

Eid-ul-Fitr is a day that marks the end of Ramadan and it has been celebrated worldwide by Muslims for over 1400 years. Except this year. With the Islamic lunar calendar being 10 or 11 days shorter than the Gregorian calendar, Eid could potentially fall on September 11th this year, depending on the moon sighting. “I have American friends who are very sensitive about September 11th” said Imam Tariq, “My neighbour always cries when he looks at his watch and it says 9:11 so I don’t want to offend him.”

To make a couple of Americans even happier, the Muslim community in New York has agreed to shut down the Ground Zero Mosque. “I applaud the Muslim community for keeping Ground Zero a sacred place,” said Ground Zero mosque opponent Newt Gingrich. “Now we have a perfect spot to build a new McDonalds. Ba-ba-ba-ba-bah I’m loving it.”

Inspired by the Muslim community’s interest in not offending a single soul, the Christian community decided to close down churches in all areas with a high density of African-Americans. “The Ku Klux Klan did some not-so-nice things to black people a couple of decades ago,” explained priest Bob Parker, “The Klan doesn’t represent Christianity but they claim they do. That makes all Christians collectively guilty for the KKK’s behaviour for some reason. Thank you Muslims for inspiring us.”

Other Muslims are enjoying the new sense of belonging in America. “Who knew integrating with our fellow Americans would be so easy?” said Khalid Usman, “all I had to do was start shaving my beard and stop taking the airplane everywhere. It takes me a few months to get to South Asia by boat but at least Americans aren’t scared of me anymore.”

Local Niqabi Sajida Syed has also stopped doing suspicious Muslim things like giving to the poor and dropped the niqab getup in favour of a ninja outfit. “Ninjas are much more accepted in society and people are high-fiving me wherever I go now.”

Imam Tariq is optimistic about the future. “9/11 was hard for all Americans, both Muslims and non-Muslims.  Once all Americans agree to stop watching Fox News and getting scared out of their wits then we’ll all start living in greater harmony. Or until homeland security kicks out all the Muslims. Whatever comes first.”

    This caught my attention:

    Quote
“I have American friends who are very sensitive about September 11th” said Imam Tariq, “My neighbour always cries when he looks at his watch and it says 9:11 so I don’t want to offend him”

To be honest, I didn't find the article funny, I found the above quote insensitive. And the whole article reeks of "woe-is-me boo-hoo i am being stepped on cauze I iz a muslim"

Fucking yawn. I should send him some hadiths about how sarcasm is haram and laughing should be kept to a minimum.

I can't help feeling he's been inspired by Cracked.com which I personally find funny.

Odd. I thought it was hilarious. I got the impression it was severely taking the piss out of Muslims who make a lifestyle out of being offended.

ETA: I think you meant tautology rather than oxymoron.

Weird I thought it was the opposite :S

    Not sure about tautology

    Quote
the saying of the same thing twice over in different words, generally considered to be a fault of style (e.g. they arrived one after the other in succession)

    Quote
[count noun] a phrase or expression in which the same thing is said twice in different words

I mean that it was a contradiction, Islam, Muslim and comedy. That it was a paradox of sorts. So not really sure it's tautological.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tautology_%28rhetoric%29

In this case it would be tautological if I described the site as a "funny comedy" site. But that would be an incorrect description (so far and according to me)  grin12

Cheesy xkcd rocks. Anyway I thought you meant that maniac and Muslim were synonymous, which would be tautology. I was only looking at the domain name you quoted.

ROFL and I thought I was being an asshole.

So was my use of oxymoron correct then? Or should I have used another word?

Yeah I thought you were being an asshole too, since you said you were. Figured you were in one of those "They're all bloody bonkers" moods or something. grin12

    So oxymoron works then.

Hm maybe should have been seriously un-funny muslim comedy site > "No need to beat us over the head with it".

Now let's just discuss you thinking the article was funny AND that it reflected the views of a muslim taking the piss of other muslims. I thought it was mocking sensitive non-muslim Americans.

Oh well it never occurred to me that any Muslim group would ever cancel anything out of consideration for the sensibilities of non-Muslims. It just doesn't even seem remotely possible, so of course I assumed the article was someone taking the piss in a big way by using the satire as a mirror for Muslim behaviour.

IOW, expecting everyone else to cancel stuff left right and centre because of Muslim sensibilities.

I think it was from the point of view of “look how far they want us to go”. “They” being evil, Zionist, Western Kafirs.

    Like totally tautological dude.

    I could be wrong though.

    Let's invite him here Cheesy

I'm reading the comments and the article could also be about:

    - how accommodating yourself to Western/American values will never change anything.

    - There is no need to change anything about Islam and Muslims in American because there is nothing to be guilty about

    - That muslims overdo the whole lets be friendly and make sure the americans feel safe

    - Or that people exaggerate American’s sensitivity, like Americans can’t take celebration on 9/11 etc

Maybe back then the Muslim community was thinking about cancelling Eid celebration? And this is a response to that?

Thinking of canceling Eid? Can't see that. No reason why they should either.

This site is the kind of thing I used to enjoy when I was a Muslim. The laughing-at-ourselves humor made it feel like I could be more acceptable to non-Muslim society.
