  • I'VE FINISHED!!!!
     OP - March 14, 2010, 11:10 PM

I felt a bit of a hypocrite.  I believed evolution was true despite not knowing many of the facts, and I believed Islam was bollocks despite having only read to sura 27.

Well, now I have not only finished reading "The language of the genes" and "The greatest show on Earth" but I have just this minute finished reading the Quran!  Having completed my research into the matter I can only conclude that the scientists present the most convincing case!

It's such a relief to have it over and done with.  I was absolutely SHOCKED to see how many places there are which clearly depict a flat Earth with the Sun and Moon orbiting it.  I used to think people taking the piss were just being silly, but now I know better.

All I can say is, wow, and people really believe this crap?

I don't come here any more due to unfair moderation.

Although you may think that makes you look clever because you can read Arabic and I can't, I think it makes me more clever because I knew it was bollocks BEFORE I had to learn another language  Wink

Did you memorize the whole Qur'an, or just bits here and there?

I tried taking Arabic classes and Qur'an classes. It kinda bored me.

I think most of Sura 55 was made easy

55:16 Which is it, of the favours of your Lord, that ye deny?
55:18 Which is it, of the favours of your Lord, that ye deny?
55:21 Which is it, of the favours of your Lord, that ye deny?
55:23 Which is it, of the favours of your Lord, that ye deny?
55:25 Which is it, of the favours of your Lord, that ye deny?
55:28 Which is it, of the favours of your Lord, that ye deny?
55:30 Which is it, of the favours of your Lord, that ye deny?
55:32 Which is it, of the favours of your Lord, that ye deny?
55:34 Which is it, of the favours of your Lord, that ye deny?
55:36 Which is it, of the favours of your Lord, that ye deny?
55:38 Which is it, of the favours of your Lord, that ye deny?
55:40 Which is it, of the favours of your Lord, that ye deny?
55:42 Which is it, of the favours of your Lord, that ye deny?
55:45 Which is it, of the favours of your Lord, that ye deny?
55:47 Which is it, of the favours of your Lord, that ye deny?
55:49 Which is it, of the favours of your Lord, that ye deny?
55:51 Which is it, of the favours of your Lord, that ye deny?
55:53 Which is it, of the favours of your Lord, that ye deny?
55:55 Which is it, of the favours of your Lord, that ye deny?
55:57 Which is it, of the favours of your Lord, that ye deny?
55:59 Which is it, of the favours of your Lord, that ye deny?
55:61 Which is it, of the favours of your Lord, that ye deny?
55:63 Which is it, of the favours of your Lord, that ye deny?
55:65 Which is it, of the favours of your Lord, that ye deny?
55:67 Which is it, of the favours of your Lord, that ye deny?
55:69 Which is it, of the favours of your Lord, that ye deny?
55:71 Which is it, of the favours of your Lord, that ye deny?
55:73 Which is it, of the favours of your Lord, that ye deny?
55:75 Which is it, of the favours of your Lord, that ye deny?
55:77 Which is it, of the favours of your Lord, that ye deny?

Now I know what is meant by Sura 18:109
18:109 Though the sea became ink for the Words of my Lord, verily the sea would be used up before the words of my Lord were exhausted.

Congrats - you just did something that the vast majority of muslims have never done i.e. read the Quran in a language they understand.  Thats why you are where you are.  If only most Muslims did that before preaching to us, rather than collectively using selective bias for their favourite verses.

The fact that Muslims have not read the Quran in its entirety in a language they understand, for something they beleive was put together by our all-knowing all-seeing creator beggars belief.

If I believed that, then I would never put it down for all the knowledge I could glean from it.

What I found really useful is making notes as I read it.  I read it on a Kindle, where each verse was translated by 3 different people so when there was a discrepancy I could look for two with the same meaning - when non corroborated I'd look in my literal translation.

    But making notes like
    "What God said to Satan"
"What the angels said to Abraham"

and so on helped me to summarise it and understand it.  Whenever I entered a conflicting note it would trigger a memory and I could easily find the contradiction.  Truly though, I am honestly shocked; considering it is supposed to be divinely authored it should be the easiest book in the world to disprove and yet so many people believe it.  Amazing!

Reading 3 books does not give you a complete understanding of science and metaphysics. You (and me) have plenty more books to finish and understand.

No, at no point did I claim to know everything.  However having read some books the truth clearly lies along the scientific route and not the Quran.  I suspected this would be the case but at least now I am in a position where I can say I have bothered to educate myself in both subjects.

Yeah, that's what I do when I'm reading through the tafsir of Jalalayn. I'm always sure to make note of the verses that they interpret as saying the earth is flat or something similarly stupid. Smiley E.g.:

    88:20

"And the earth, how it was laid out flat?, and thus infer from this the power of God, exalted be He, and His Oneness? The commencing with the [mention of] camels is because they are closer in contact with it [the earth] than any other [animal]. As for His words sutihat, ‘laid out flat’, this on a literal reading suggests that the earth is flat, which is the opinion of most of the scholars of the [revealed] Law, and not a sphere as astronomers (ahl al-hay’a) have it"

    71:19

"And God has made the earth a flat [open] expanse for you,"

    79:30

"and after that He spread out the earth: He made it flat, for it had been created before the heaven, but without having been spread out;"

    Hehehe...

When I was around 11-12 I had a few months when I was very religious and I read all of quran's translation in my language alongwith a tafsir. Funnily enough everyone tried to get me to stop reading it. I remember from right then that i didn't see anything miraculous in the quran.. it was just another book. I tried very hard to see something divine or miraculous but I didn't.

I really liked surah al rahman (55) though, I still do. But in the rest of the quran I didn't see anything miraculous.

I think this eventually played a part in my apostasy, if I had never read all the translation, i might've kept believing that it was a divine book.

Btw, does anyone else know about that silly rule that you're not allowed to read the full quran in less than 3 days? So you can't start on the morning and finish on the evening. I think it must be because they know that if someone read something that repetitive for all day he would get fed up!

From the original post, it seemed as though you had completed your research on 'the matter' (presuambly science and metaphysics) by reading a few popular science books and a translation of the quran:

Just found a complete english translation of the quran by Pickthal.

For those who have never read the quran in its entirety, I recommend reading it.  Its about the size of an average book, and very repetitive so it can be skim read.  There only seems to be about 5 themes that it develops.  Anyone who says it can only be produced by a divine being is either lying or stupid.

...or mesmerised by its audacious claims. lol. I find that to be one of the most off-putting things about reading the Qur'an, when you read it, you get the impression God is talking to you as if you're a little child who knows nothing about the world. Such an arrogant and condescending tone that underlies its verses.

thetruecall.com (contains an audio version as well) and quranexplorer.com are both good sites to read the Qur'an online just in case you still live in a Muslim household and your parents insist that you perfom Wudu before you touch the Qur'an.

I've never read the whole Quran. We didn't have compulsory Islamic Education classes in Iraq until Saddam's sudden religious awakening in 1993. He made it compulsory from 3rd grade until 12th. So we had to memorize selected Ayas and study selected tafseer. But apart from that, I never did. In fact now that it's been about 10 years since I last prayed I only remember 4-5 short Suras.
