     OP - April 19, 2010, 12:59 PM

27:61 says that Allah made the Earth a "fixed" abode.

Can an Arabic reader please tell me, is this "fixed" as in "does not move" or is it "fixed" as in "permanent place to live"?

    Thanks Smiley

You see this is why I don't get into these debates - you can never prove anything either way.

Yes Qaraar suggests it is sedentary, fixed, and does not move. But Muslims today will of course claim that means it is just stable/steady in the sense that it is not shaking about and does not mean the earth is not moving. It's possible it can have both meanings - though it's odd that Allah did not clarify things a bit better seeing as people thought the earth didn't move - and seeing that man would later discover the Earth's movements.

Anyway this is from Tafseer Ibn Kathir:

أمن جعل الأرض قرارا  أي قارة ساكنة ثابتة لا تميد ولا تتحرك بأهلها ولا ترجف بهم فإنها لو كانت كذلك لما طاب عليها العيش والحياة
""The one who made the Earth fixed" means sedentary, still, fixed, not swaying and not moving it's inhabitants and not shaking them, for if it did that, then living and life would not be able to flourish upon it."

    i think it's more like...
Allah made earth as a 'settlement' or firm place to live.. establishment..

then again... like anything in the quran .. i could be wrong..

I think some of the commentaries on it are quite interesting:

    Ibn Kathir:

(Is not He Who has made the earth as a fixed abode,) meaning, stable and stationary, so that it does not move or convulse, because if it were to do so, it would not be a good place for people to live on. But by His grace and mercy, He has made it smooth and calm, and it is not shaken or moved.

    Jalalayn:

Or He Who made the earth an abode [of stability], that does not [constantly] shake beneath [the feet of] its inhabitants, and made rivers [to flow] throughout it and set firm mountains for it, with which He fixed the earth [in place]

But still, something like that is easy to reinterpret as being 'metaphorical.'

Is there nothing in the Arabic word used which indicates the meaning?

You could always try looking up the word in Lane's Lexicon, which you can get online.

Okay, thanks all.  I saw someone on youtube using it to claim an error but it looked too weak an argument to use so I just wanted to make sure.

Actually guys this is yet another "Scientific Miracle" of the Qur'an. It proves how the rotation of the earth and it's orbit are so perfectly tuned that they also provide complete stability for it's inhabitants.

    Mashallah!

And Allah wanted all the Muslims and Scholars to be unaware of what the true meaning was until the West discovered it was moving, because that's the way he rolls!

It's definitely not a man-made book written from the perspective of a 7th century nomad who thought the earth was flat and not moving! Pffft!

lol Smiley I'm tempted to do a " Scientific Miracles of Twilight" showing that Twilight isn't a sappy teen romance novel but really holds secrets that could have only been told by God!

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?
