At least Pakistan had an elected female leader. The first Muslim state to do so. I don't see that happening in Iraq in the near future. We might be less religious but our society certainly has a more tribalistic and patriarchal nature than Pakistan's. I think.

I notice a more macho culture in Arab states, perhaps thats where the patricarchal nature comes from..

    Happy Birthday my friend !
     party!
But why should birthdays not be celebrated?  Huh?

Because in Islam there are only two holidays, Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha. Even the prophet's birthday isn't supposed to be a day for celebration.

What do you mean, as I am not sure if thats true?  There is a strong identity in Pakistan, even down to the different provinces - in fact in-fighting is always breaking out between them.

Some examples of what I mean are, the whole "honor" issue which make it somewhat ok for a male to have pre-marital sex but if a female did the same thing the whole community will think poorly of her family. Like in our neighborhood we knew that the sons of our neighbors were having sex and nobody thought it was a big deal and said "oh he's young and a GUY". But if a girl dared hinting that she had a boyfriend (with no sex) she would ostracized and told "your brother is a BOY you're a GIRL".

Another example is that it's not acceptable for a family to look for suitor for their daughter while it's perfectly acceptable to look for a good bride-to-be for their son.

There's a hadith that demonstrates this kind of hypocrisy perfectly.

Some guy comes to Muhammad and asks him if extra-marital intercourse is lawful and Muhammad responds by asking him, 'Would you like that for your sister/daughter/mother?'

Which is funny coming from a man who had extra-marital sex and allowed keeping women as sex slaves and war booty. I wonder if he'd like that for his female progeny?

Women aren't allowed to do it because men don't like the idea of it, but men, of course, can be as libertine as they want.

Nah, I think its worse in DesiLand, at least your women get a choice - forced arranged marriages, although becoming more uncommon, still happen out there.  mysmilie_977

LOL you know for a rational atheist that comment is pretty.... yeah.

     cool2

But on a serious note (why am I advocating alcohol abuse?) you should try A. Different types of Beer B. Different types of Wine C. Different types of mixed drinks

Maybe you should start that shit reverse, like with C. Beer and Wine are acquired tastes, sort of like coffee or snails. OK definitely start reverse. You get a good mix you won't notice the alcohol. It's a great tip I got from a Catholic priest.

Hehe try some alcopops first, the sugary drinks are nice right? Or maybe amaretto and coke? Once you like the sweet ones gradually you'll try the rest and may even like a few.

When I started drinking I only drank the sweetest rose wine and now I only drink dry white wine, so yeah it is an acquired taste.

Besides, beer is horrible dude... bad choice for your first alcoholic drink!
