    Somehow an afterlife might help to resolve some of the apparent moral conflicts in this life.

    For example, if it would be considered a heroically moral act for one person to sacrifice their life to save another, then in the absence of an afterlife, only a fool would be a hero.  For such a sacrifice would always be against his own interest (unless they were already depressed and ready to commit suicide anyway).  If there was an afterlife it might be in both the interest of the hero and the person they saved.

    Without an afterlife, the interests of ourselves and that of others will come into conflict at some points.  With an afterlife, they might be able to be reconciled.

    Anyway, there are lots of things about life now I quite enjoy.  If the afterlife means more of those, I wouldn't mind so much.

    I agree, the prospect of forever just doesn't resonate with me. It seems unsatisfactory. Especially if that existence involves some sort of induced euphoria :s

    I'm not sure about the afterlife, but I think there may be something out there. I'm not sure what it is though. Not saying its reincarnation lol, but it might be something else.

    I hate the thought of a slow and painful death. If I get too old and incapacitated, I think I would gladly choose some form of assisted suicide.

    I don't really fear death as such, though of course I don't look forward to it. I don't find any sort of concrete evidence of an afterlife. I don't mind non-existing because I quite like sleeping anyway.

    I never understood a lot of things those who really believe in a God and an Afterlife do.

    Why do they mourn their dead?
    Won't they be reunited in a few decades and spend the rest of eternity together? After being reunited a few billion years those decades will be as nothing. If I believed in the eternal afterlife, I don't think I would have to mourn anyone because death would be meaningless. It would just be like they moved somewhere else for a short time.

    Why do they heal their sick?
    Why prevent the sick from dying and rising up to experience the wonders of paradise? If someone dies, then God/Allah must have decided their time was up. No point in fighting that? In fact stealing their death will only expose them to more harm and hurt here on earth. If you truly believe in a paradise, saving someone from dying is actually a cruel and selfish action!

    Also, the concept of existing for all eternity completely devalues life on earth. The only thing you really have to do is accept the true religion (if you manage to find it from the thousands of choices), and everything else is just wasting time while you wait for death and your ascension to paradise/heaven.

    As for my personal thoughts on the matter, they have already been expressed by others. Especially the Mark Twain quote is fitting.

    As far as I'm concerned, we are just another animal; and animals are just another living being, and living beings are just a cluster of atoms.  We humans have evolved self-awareness, so we KNOW we will die one day, and we are terrified of it.  So we solve the problem by lying to ourselves using religion and all this afterlife bullshit.  Ta dah!   Hindus use reincarnation to comfort themselves and Christians/Muslims/Jews etc have this life hereafter concept.

    As I cannot confirm nor deny the existence of an afterlife, I don't see the point in contemplating over it.

    Death itself is only scary to me in part, reason being that I will be absent from the lives of those dear to me and I will not have the pleasure in enjoying their company any longer. 

    Having said that, when I was a muslim I was terrified of death! Heh, glad that episode is over.

    i'm all for reincarnation. a reboot if you will. hopefully it will be like the ending of lost but held in a strip bar.

    I've been reading the threads and previous posting with interest. it seems that most people have either converted due to a inner need for religion in their lives or been indoctrinated at a early age and had questions which just weren't answered or could not be ever answered in a satisfactory manner.

    I've never had this. I've never had the need or urge to pray regularly nor been forced to attend the temple. Thing that i have been forced to do have been more culturally expected as opposed to a religious requirement, which I've gone with just like many of you to keep the peace. So i could just as well happily carry on doing the same thing for the rest of my life.

    When i die, if there's nothing after then fair enough. If I'm reincarnated I'll have have as much control of it as choosing when i die  I guess i have control as to what I'm reincarnated as by my actions / karma accrued in this life. Does this give me the urge to forsake my worldly possessions and join an ashram in order to attain  a higher spiritual learning and more karma? No. Do i want to remember what i did in a previous life? Speaking for myself not particularity. Although my understanding from what I've read is that it is possible to do so.

    I was reading calms post in the other blogs and bios section in the thread Hinduism and me. I read her objections, but didn't agree with them. Not to say that she's wrong, it's just that her experiences are obviously different from mine.

    AS i mentioned before i've started reading up on hindusim. one thing that i've read so far i find odd.  it may well be i need further insight or i'm unable to understand or comprehend fully. It's not a show stopper however. It may well be like most of you that every time i tug on a string the wider tapestry starts to unravel completely. or it may well be i end up with a couple of loose threads and can live with it.

    I'm happy with the possibility!

    From what I've read it is possible to retain information from one live to the next. I'm quite happy not to remember, why would you want to remember?

    Well, I'm sure you all know already that I believe in reincarnation and karma.  I think that once you have managed to shed all the negative energy, in the form of karma you can then progress to the next stage of being which from our mortal standpoint might seem like heaven as there is no pain, starvation, physical ills, etc.  This may take a few lifetimes or perhaps even hundreds or even thousands depending upon how much karma you build up during each lifetime.

    As to being born a girl in Afghanistan, perhaps these unfortunate souls were very bad people in their previous lives and therefore are having their karma meted out to them in their current lifetimes in the form of being a female in the anti-woman society of Afghanistan.  I'm not saying that these poor girls deserve the ill treatment they are subjected to but that there is some higher, karmic purpose as to why they were born as who they are and where they are.  Needless to say, the men who mete out such harsh treatment to these poor girls will get theirs whether it is in this lifetime or the next or even in several lifetimes.

    I'm hoping that I am at or near the end of my time on this hellearth and that when I die I don't have to reincarnate back here and that I can proceed on to nirvana or whatever you wish to call it.

    I believe that many of our fears and phobias are memories retained from previous incarnations.  For example I have always been scared shitless of being struck by lightning and cower in fear whenever there is a thunderstorm overhead.  Perhaps I was killed by a lighning strike in a past life and the memory is retained in this one as a phobia of thunderstorms?

    I would like to be able to remember or be regressed to find out about my past lives so I know what to avoid doing in this one so that I can avoid having to be reborn and go through another life here. God!  Just the thought of being a helpless baby and then having to go through childhood again puts me off!
