I think Hijabs are pretty, especially the lacy and colorful kinds.
Although I always crack a smile when I see muslims wear the hijab and then wear tight ass clothes and have a cigarette in one hand.
o well, what the hell do i know?

I wonder what scholars have to say about the hijabi fetishists. They are more common than most realize.

I've thought that before. I'd laugh if they say something like "well it's those men who are in the wrong if they act upon their hijab fetish." To which we would say, OMG, that's one step closer to a Westerner's approach!  dance

Really difficult Pariah. To some people it is a core belief which can take years to change, if ever. The best approach I can recommend is to stand your ground and be consistent with it. But there is the issue of backlashes with this. So best to check which way the air is blowing before throwing that boomerang.

What has it been like in terms of testing the waters out? Every time you see a female English Muslim not wearing one you can subtly just mention "Isn't her hair just lovely! She's a Muslim btw … " and just see what the reaction is. Take this is as some sort of feasibility/probe readings.

PS: Don't listen to me, I'm a guy and don't have the mental capability to understand womanly things.. !

You know what Pariah, the more I think about it, the more I think the approach being taken here is wrong. Changing their core beliefs is a very difficult thing to do.

However, as my sisters seem to have shown, they can tactfully use NLP techniques such that my rents don't mind them not wearing one so long as they do so at other times. For a full understanding of the situation, I think the following questions need answering:

    How devout are your parents?
How long have you been wearing one?
How pervasive is the hijab in your family?
Are there times you don't wear one?
How loyal are you to to your parents?
Are you okay with saying no to things?
How integrated are you parents to society (I assume you live in the West?) e.g. do your parents have jobs that face the general public?
    How strict are your parents?

I understand you may not wish to share such things on a public forum, but these are definitely the variables needed in order to see if the NLP techniques my sisters seem to use will work for you. I think some parental minds are too past a threshold to be changed back. But if your parents are general moderates, I think it is doable.

Thanks for your constructive reply HighOctane. yes

I'm taking this approach because it's the only option I have available at the moment, at least I think it is.  I can't say I'm a murtad and I disagree with hijab, so basically all I can do is somehow convince them that hijab isn't necessary/fardh for muslim women.

Anyhow I'll attempt to answer a few of your questions...

    How devout are your parents?

At the moment they are very religious and cultural.  Mum and sisters were hijab and jilbab.

How long have you been wearing one?

    Since I was 14.

How pervasive is the hijab in your family?

Everyone wears it and recently some cousins do the niqab too.

Are there times you don't wear one?

Nope, not when I'm with family.

Are you okay with saying no to things?

    With most things, yes.

How integrated are you parents to society (I assume you live in the West?) e.g. do your parents have jobs that face the general public?

We're in London.  Parent's aren't intergrated very well at all.

    How strict are your parents?

Quite strict I'd say... they're more like the emotional-blackmailing type.

In my family my religious siblings have a lot of authority and parents listen to them a lot.

Hope that helps?  By the way, what is this NLP technique?

I'm sorry but before HighOctane tells you all about the magic of NLP please read this article to get a balanced view on it, or at least a skeptical one:

HC can I take a wild guess here?

Do your sisters say a specific phrase and then touch somebody while saying it? To anchor that feeling when they say the word?
  • Re: Hijab

Oh, NLP can mean different things to be honest, but what I was referring to was tactful motivational/persuasion skills.

Will get back to you Pariah.

HC can I take a wild guess here?

Do your sisters say a specific phrase and then touch somebody while saying it? To anchor that feeling when they say the word?

Was this question for me? Sorry I don't understand the question ...
  • Re: Hijab

Anchoring is a NLP method. Forget it, I used to be into all of this until I realized most of it is a load of crap. Just another thing that's too good to be true, according to me at least.
  • Re: Hijab

Interesting, thanks though, I've not seen this side of NLP. The types of NLP I've been aware of have been communication/leadership based e.g. using the correct words when communicating with the right people. I have questioned parts of it in the past.
