Why do Western Women Convert?

Following 9/11, the number of people converting to Islam began to rise. In the US it is estimated that approximately 30,000 convert annually. There are about 2.4 million Muslims in Britain and studies suggest there are between 10,000 and 14,000 white converts among them. It is estimated that 75 per cent are female.

Interesting article. Mentions the attractions of Western women converting are due to:

- the sisterhood
- wearing a veil/burka to avoid being seen as a sex object by men
- the Quran being more clear cut on the roles of women over other books (e.g. the Bible since it can be vauge ... )

... but things can go wrong as you'll read in the article for the specific women the reporter had met.

Because they have a boyfriend who they want to stay with and are presented with the following options

A: Convert
B: Watch him marry someone else, and either never see him again or spend your life as the "other woman".

Very few people convert for the 'right' reasons, such as the religion being intellectually sound.

People choose what suits their ideals and what fulfills their expectations of how they think things should be. Most people are motivated by their current emotional and mental state. It's not very different from choosing what sort of clothes you wear or the type of food you enjoy to eat. A defining property of many religious people is the dislike of uncertainty. The more you crave order and certainty about your role and what is expected of you, the more you are likely to gravitate towards a religion that reflects these needs.

As a former 'revert' here are my reasons for becoming Muslim:
1. The sisterhood
2. The supposed 'elevated' role of women in Islam
3. It gave me an excuse to wear shalwar kameez and long, flowey Arabic clothes.
4. The hijab - didn't have to worry about doing my damn hair anymore!
5. It would give me a better chance to nab myself a hot, sexy Asian Muslim guy as opposed to the ruddy faced white boys my family would have liked to see me with.
6. As a Muslimah I wouldn't have to fight my way up the career ladder in a post feminist society as my man would supposedly have to take care of me as per his Islamic duty thus giving me more time to concentrate on my studies, hobbies, etc.

What a crock all that turned out to be!

The new sister's group at the East London Mosque that the author of the article mentioned is the group I used to go to.

2. They have self-esteem issues and the hijab and male patriarchy in Islam makes them feel comfertable.

I would add one little theory of mine. Humans have a tendency to fall in love with a foreign culture. Perhaps this is part of the 'grass is greener on the other side' theory.

Also, with Islam, all the multiculturalism of the 1990s meant that Islam's dirty laundry was kept hidden. So it seemed like an exotic culture from the outside.

Thanks Nour, indeed that is a real insight. Could you share anything more on the East London Mosque? What used to be discussed, how often did you go, what did you think of the Mosque in general, what were the other women/sisters like?

Why do we still talk about these articles? These magazines and newspapers rerun the same lame articles several times a year, and have done so for as long as I can remember - usually accompanied by some file photo of an Arab in niqab or a blue-eyed woman in an ugly scarf. Yawn it is so boring. It is "our" women going over to "their" side. The undertones of losing "our" (white) women to them (brown men with bit schnozes or Asians).

And then, of course, they're full of dubious numbers touting the crowds of women rushing to become part of the ummah -- and no one ever asks where these numbers come from, how they are recorded, who sourced them and even more -- for each woman (or man or whatever) who converts how many leave? The masjids I was part of crowed to newspapers about "hundreds of converts" after 9/11 but I swear to flying spaghetti monster I never saw but three of them and all three of them were done with Islam within months. Gosh golly gee, the men who ran these masjids LIED to the (kafir) media about people embracing Islam in the aftermath of allah-inspired mass murder? How unusual! I mean any of you in the UK, do you see in the masjids and in the Islamic schools a reality that supports this claim of 30,000 British converts per year? Think about it.

I've also had my little interactions with the leader of the group in the magazine article. She's kind of a nut and very annoying, but also, from what I recall, somewhat warm and motherly.

I have never heard that Arab men have legendary sexual prowess. From what I know, if that is indeed some sort of urban legend, then Snopes needs to debunk that shit. Like pronto.

Speaking on behalf of a Caucasian non-practicing Catholic friend, she finds Islam exotic. The thing is, like her, I assume many women who convert to Islam (though my friend did not and would not convert to Islam), they probably don't know enough about Islam beforehand. I think people have a way of romanticising something they don't know much about, but all they look at is the outwards physical symbol of Muslim women wearing exotic clothing that Western women do not see very often.

I would agree with the above person who said humans have a desire to fall in love with other foreign cultures, as an Australian, I find the Australian culture (if we have one because it seems boring to me) uninteresting, but I can look at any other culture and be amazed at it. I think the difference is that I wouldn't get to the point where I could trick myself into believing nonsense because my mind has lead me to adore these cultural imports to that extent.

I have to ask how many converts stay with Islam. I think, though I can't back this up, as women or converts who convert with little understanding actually start seeing what Islam demands of them, these people would probably start re-thinking things a bit. I wouldn't be surprised if half of the converts left Islam eventually, just because it becomes a passing fad.

You're right, its not true. What is annoying though is when the BBC, and some newspapers repeat that mantra unquestioningly, when its a piece of dawah propaganda, in all these articles you see from time to time about cuddly, fluffy, misunderstood Islam, and how everybody has to celebrate, love and agree with it, or else.

Also, that response after 9/11, when alot of Muslims would kind of boast about the billions of people converting to Islam after 9/11......it was almost like they were positioning it as a good thing.

That is true, and that is changing. Its a very good point.

However, you also have to include Islams prosletysing, evangelical impulse. It has a mission - to convert the world, and to save kuffars. And it has always done that. Islam as a religion does have an imperial mentality, and it verifies itself, and feels most alive, when it can enact the dynamics of this - snuffing out 'the other', and replacing it with the one true faith.

There are just a number of people, in any society, at a certain time of their lives, who will be susceptible to this kind of message.

One reason that was over looked....people are friggen weirdos.

Look how many people convert to scientology, to mormonism, bahai, or the church of the 12 tribes of bahbahgunush. hell, There was a crazy lady in indonesia who claims she's the reincarnation of muhammed, mary, and jibril...and she has like hundreds of followers.

I could probably start a religion based on pudding, and have at least 10 converts in a month. Now imagine what you could do with giant cultural institutions supporting you.

interesting article. its always a gap in some one's life that the religion fills. and once people find it they convert.
