I guess I missed it lol.

Yep, I've met up with Berberella, Islame, Shahid Raza, Nour, Omar Khayyam, Dr Diavlo, Humanoid, Pakman, Zia, Maryam Namazie, Reza, Radiohead (Kid A), Iris... and quite a few others... Smiley

I was was a fresh out of the bag ex-Muslim when I met her on FFI - she really was the only reason I stayed on there for a while - unlike Ali Sina - or a couple others who "claimed to be Ex-Muslim - she was the only one who felt real - she was a real person that I could identify with - she's special - always has been  Afro

I know it seems silly now, but when I first met ex-Muslims I was surprised that they were nice, ordinary people just like me.

Not sure what I was expecting - horns I think lol

You might be.  But I just checked on Atheist Nexus there are 17 atheists from Indonesia.  It seems none of them are ex-Muslims, but you could still check them out.  Atheists tend to be very nice people. Afro

    First of all, welcome!

Now, please allow me to ask a few questions. You said:

There actually a quiet amount of Saudi atheists  some even living in Saudi Arabia which is really hard.

Like how many? did you conduct a survey? Or are you saying that you happened to come across Saudi atheists who just happened to confess their Atheism to you?

    Quote
Saudi atheists are like the sweetest type of Saudi people I've ever met! So smart and caring. Not sexist at all like the despicable sharia law that rules over it. Saudi atheists that are women are the strongest women I've ever met.

Of course, leaving Islam can turn your typical male Saudi boar into a dove and a Saudi hen into an eagle.

    Quote
If only they were brave enough to speak up about the atrocities that happen in Saudi and other Islamic countries worldwide.

Atrocities in Saudi Arabia, against whom? I would like to hear some of them.

    Quote
But yes, not only will they be censored but they'll be harassed everywhere, dishonor the family, and last but not least... dead!

You mean killed by their families or by the authorities?

    Quote
Someone mentioned that my parents are "chill." lol They're not! They're ok in some sense and not in others. I was not allowed to ever talk to anyone. Male or female.

    What the...? not even females?!

    Quote
Yes, it was school and straight back home. Even when I wanted to introduce a girl to them, they'd say no. I wasn't allowed to use the phone. It was prison. My older brother however was allowed to do anything and everything.

Good God! not even the phone?!!! And YET this super strict family of yours, who won't even let you talk over the phone or mingle with female friends, they somehow allowed you to go to university abroad and live on your own! Not only that, back in Saudi they gave you enough freedom to bump into local Saudi atheists, both male and female.

I have to say I'm fascinated by this story.  Roll Eyes

Take it easy debunker.  She's only 18.
Her story doesn't surprise me.  I live in Britain and my teenage sister has to wear the niqab whenever she goes out shopping with the family.
Darkeyed9 is currently in the US and I can imagine a conservative Muslim family being very wary of her getting westernised.  Furthermore, different families are different.  They may allow freedom in one aspect but be very strict in another aspect.

You live in England as an immigrant, right? You're not a student on a scholarship leaving your family back home, right?  Conservative Saudi females talk over the phone and they mingle with their female friends AND they do go out in the streets on their own (except they need a hired driver to drive the car for them... the notion that Saudi females must be accompanied with male guardians, when outside is a LIE.) Yet, on average, very few Saudi families would allow their daughters to study abroad... so Darkeyed story is the OPPOSITE of the Saudi norm, and that's why I find it interesting.

My dear, a *conservative* Saudi family does NOT send their daughter abroad for college and stay behind.... only the ultra liberal Saudis do this... yet, another reason to be sacinated by her story.

No, I didn't construct a survey hence why I never stated I did. I know a few atheists in Saudi and when I mean it's hard for them living there, I meant they have to represent Islam. They people I'm talking about don't live in Jeddah which is a tad more liberal than the other parts of Saudi. They have to wear the niqab, be separated from the opposite sex, etc. which is hard and annoying for them because
    (a) They're not Muslim to begin with,
    (b) They want to do simple things that are "haram" such a hanging out and such.
    (c) They can't speak openly about their beliefs with professors/family/others/etc.

They know about this page but just like me, they never actually joined because we're all lazy -_-

Of course, leaving Islam can turn your typical male Saudi boar into a dove and a Saudi hen into an eagle.

Agreed. I'm not an eagle though Smiley I prefer a tiger as my title.

    Against women.

    Families.

My parents are mentally ill, seriously speaking. I go to therapy to deal with this.

I met these Saudi atheists, both male and female online. I only met one female in real life back in Saudi. The other is my cousin. Again, my family have the mind set of back home yet they're a bit liberal too. I didn't just run up to them and ask them if I can go and they said "yes." It took a lot of work and I had to "prove myself" to them. I've only dormed for one semester and they want me to come back home but I won't.

I have to say I'm fascinated by this story.  Roll Eyes

Thanks. I fascinate myself at times.

And you have a say in this? They changed their mind and want you back, yet you can say no to them? even though they have the power to cut off the scholarship on you?

By the way, your English is excellent.. I have been living in the US for years and my English is not as good as yours... and you're only 18 years old... That's very impressive! I mean, it is well known that Saudis who finish High School in Saudi Arabia (regardless of whether the school is private or not), speak very poor English, yet you could get to this level in less than a year of studying abroad! Well then why bother even joining this forum since this is all online? Of course, you can be deceived online. I'm very aware of this. One of the females were my cousin as I mentioned earlier and the other was my neighbor back in Saudi. I am also Emirati you know. I believe I mentioned that too.

The real question is, do women feel truly free to go to the authorities to report domestic violence or other abuses?  Or are they more likely to suffer in silence because of the male dominated society, and because Islam gives men the licence to beat their wives?

No. FYI, Saudi Arabia does not give the Saudi nationality to children from non-Saudi fathers... and assuming you got a Saudi passport somehow, you are Emarati first, Saudi second (although it's mind-boggling an Emarati family would leave the UAE and live in Saudi... just another mystery in your story).
